Meet the Judges

Delator — Mrs Janet Andrews

L-R: Magician Van de Hoge Laer & Broccio du Bois du Tot

The Affix Delator came about through my love of Yorkshire, where as a chld I spent many happy months with my late aunt and uncle, I took the two words DELL and Tor, Dell being a small low lying, sometimes wooded area, and Tor being a high peak, the Kennel lub refused DELLANDTOR so we abbreviated it to DELATOR which was accepted, this being the early 60’s.

I first became interested in the Belgian Shepherd dog in the late 70’s after considerable success with GSD’s in Obedience, and a small amount of showing, but at the time my interest lay in obedience. Taking my first bitch up to ’C’. After a litter of GSD’s all had HD I decided to look for something less prone to HD and went to Crufts and walking around the working group came across the BSD Tervueren, & after enquiries found that Mrs Ralph of Kepammi affix was due to have a litter from her Am Import ’Colombe O’ Albions Franglad of Kepammi. Being from the successful ’Chateau Blanc’ and ’Fauve Charbonne’ kennels in USA. ’Piper’ Kepammi Heather of Delator’ came to us early 1980 in partnership with Mrs Ralph. She was a strong willed Tervueren, strong in bone, with really good construction and movement, but in those days not the elegant lines of today’s.

She excelled at showing under the all rounders, at the East of England Ch show she was the first Tervueren to attain Reserve in the Working Group under the late Fred Curnow, at the first BSDA Ch show she was BOB Tervueren then RBIS and also BOS in Show.

In 1977 we made contact with Lady Karin Watson, then residing in Belgium and through her brought in Boris & Claudette of the Two. Claudette being from Zultan of the Two x Urane du Bois du Tot, Boris being If du Puits d’ombelle x Juby des Trois Fleuves. From these two a large proportion of the early kennels in the UK obtained stock. Boris was later sold to Sweden as his type, at that time was too early for the breeders in this country. Claudette died at the age of 11 years.

We were able to purchase later from Dr Surget ’du Bois du Tot’ ’Asterie’ and ’Broccio’, Broccio being a repeat mating of the famous ’Ares’, Broccio was later sold to Eternity Kennels in Sweden.

Then came Vidame du Bois du Tot, who was to stay in England for a short time before going on to Pat Marchevsky in Australia.

We then purchased a Groenendael from ’van de Hoge Laer’ the fabulous Magician who although was 5th pick, excelled our wildest dreams by attaining the title Ch. He sadly died at the age of 10yrs. Nothing could replace Magic, but Juan Louis pestered David that he had a better dog than David’s Ch. D Regal Raider, so into quarantine came the famous ’Ninja van de Hoge Laer’. Sadly being an adult when he came out of quarantine he did not like Raider so the later Caroline Harvey ’Charbonny’ had Ninja in partnership with David.

In 1984, I with Jackie Macandie and Judith Cloutt, thought about compiling a book about Belgian Shepherds, to try and include some of the old BSD’s with photos and pedigrees, articles from the Continent, America and of course the UK. This proved a mammoth task, sadly Jackie had to withdraw for personal reasons, so Judith and I carried it on. The printing and publishing costs were

Colossal and at the end of the day the printing company we had used went out of business, so everything had to be changed to a fresh printing company, the finished article was not as glamorous as we would have hoped but it was finished. It will never be updated, not by us anyway as at the end of the day it cost in the region of £15,000. It was called simply ‘The Belgian Shepherd Dog’ There are still copies available from both myself and Judith, cost has been reduced from £15 to £7.50, as we found that pages came away.

Judging started for me in the early 80’s when Belgian Shepherds were in the Any Variety classes. I then had my first Ch show judging appointment late ‘80s at Scotland. I have since judged the Junior males and females at the Royal Groenendal Club in Belgium 1990, in Laekenois, Malinois, Groenendael & Tervueren, also at many Ch shows, have also done BIS at our own club BSDA Ch show in 2002 and BIS at Norbel Ch show 2007.

Also at Crufts 2007 they finally allowed me to judge the Groebenendaels, and I have been appointed to judge Laekenois & Malinois 2009. I have also been doing a number of Working & Pastoral groups at Open shows, seeing my winners going on to Reserve BIS’s.

I am a Life member of the Belgian Shepherd Dog Assoc. of GB also a Vice President having served on the Committee for more years than I care to remember, standing down last year for a break.

At the moment our tribe consists of 7 Tervueren, 3 of which are oldies and the others ranging from 1yr-5yrs and 3 whippets (these are Davids), and of course the 3 girls (horses), a welsh section D, Cleveland Bay, and Welsh part-bred and of course HIS LORDSHIP the B/W gypsy horse!!!

Returning to the UK in Jan 2008 will be out ’boy’ who’s life from the age of 12 weeks has been traumatic. Sold to a person in Portugal, who when ’Rafa’ and David arrived was found not to be who they claimed and a swift decision to return him to the UK had to be made, of course he had to go into quarantine. But with a l9ovely twist to the tale someone on the continent offered to let him do his 6 months ’Pet Passport’ with them in their home. So off he went again, now only 16 weeks, he has been spoiled, lived with puppies of his own age, so much better then having to ‘do’ 6 months quarantine.

Hopefully coming later in 2008 a bitch puppy, under the pet passport from the ’Van Moned’ Kennels in Holland

Lykos — Ms Kris Malinowski

Chris with Dante (Top Groenendael 07) & Rush (Top Groenendael Puppy 07)

My love affair with our wonderful breed began in 1988 when I acquired ‘Tosca’, a two and a half yr old Groenendael bitch who was looking for a new home through no fault of her own. I was to be her fourth home and her last. Through her I started going to shows with a friend just to watch and it was at one of these shows I first set eyes on the Dutch import Ch Gooitzen V’t Belgisch Schoon. Not a big dog by any means but ‘Blackie’ felt he was a giant and he was feisty enough to be one! I was so enamoured by him I told my friend I wanted one just like that. Well several weeks later I acquired my first ‘show’ dog in the shape of Frostye Foam Follower who I have to say was nothing like his father in character being a much softer boy who as it transpired was not a lover of the showring but we learned together. The rest as they say is history.

I have been immensely fortunate in the dogs I have chosen and very grateful to those breeders who are willing to give me their very best. In all I have owned ten dogs over the years with 35CC’s and 23RCC’s between them including three Groenendael Champions & one Tervueren Champion, several Speciality BIS, RBIS winners, & several Crufts CC’s. Preferring to keep males I did try my hand at breeding but sadly something went wrong at the last fence & I made the decision not to breed. Thankfully there are enough of you out there using breeding lines I have a real love for be it for type or temperament (and I still prefer the feisty ones!).

In recent years I have had the real honour of owning the UK’s Top Dog for three consecutive years Ch Ebontide Nexus and his little bro’ Ebontide Sentinel is also Top Puppy for 2007. Their father is the outstanding producer Fr Ch Rival de la Fureur du Crepuscule who I have had the pleasure of meeting on a few occasions whilst over visiting the French Speciality.

I began my judging career in 1993 & as I’m sure you are aware our system in the UK is very different as breed specialists are encouraged & brought to the fore wherever possible. I have to date judged in excess of 600 dogs including the Swedish & Czech Republic Specialities & have had the pleasure of seeing many beautiful dogs both at home and abroad. I am very much looking forward to judging the breed in Australia & thank you for the opportunity of doing so.
