Lahore Bokhara Selection

Why Lahore & why Bokhara?

It has long been written that the carpets from Lahore are in a class by themselves. They are woven from the finest Australian wool - durable, warm, springy and never matted, imported through Karachi, with a warp and weft of cotton for strength, and to inhibit any change in shape. " The wool of the carpets made for Shah Jehan (famous as the builder of the Taj Mahal) is indistinguishable, except by technical tests, from silk." Litt. "Rugs to Riches" by Caroline Bosley.  Published by Pantheon New York. "These Lahore Bokhara rugs are finely woven of wool with a high gloss.  The wool is so glossy that the colours really appear to change as you walk from one end of the rug to the other, as though it were made of silk."  The sheen is imparted by a number of factors, not the least of which is double washing near the end of the process.  As well, this tightens the weave.   The carpet industry in Lahore has a history older, perhaps, than any other country - a heritage to draw upon, not just centuries, but millennia old.  Here are the home of Oriental carpets.  This is indeed Carpet Country.

I was initially impressed with these rugs in 1976 when, displaying my first shipment of 52 Persian and Oriental rugs, a local businessman on sighting the 6 Lahore Bokharas said, "These are obviously the best", and purchased two. Earlier this year in Tucson, Arizona, I saw a Bokhara gracing the floor at the home of a wealthy rancher. He told me that he had seen it in the window of a rug shop in Piccadilly in London and had to have it.

Bokhara rugs from Lahore are sometimes known as Princess Bokharas, or Royal Bokharas, or Royal Mori Bokharas, depending on quality.  The artisans of the area also produce Saphs or family prayer rugs, which feature a design with a row of niches.
