25Jul1999 - AUSTRALIA: REVIEW - CDs <return to top>
By KATE PARSONS.
WEIR, Killing Heidi (Roadshow/Warner): An exciting debut single from teen brother and sister songwriting duo Ella and Jesse Hooper. The pair - aged 16 and 17 respectively - recently sprang to attention when their four-piece band Killing Heidi was unearthed by the clever people at Triple J. Their great first single, Weir, is a sweet and deceptively simple song about the values of friendship that showcases Ella's glorious vocals and the band's raw but restrained energy. A band to watch - 7.5/10

I mean ok, what a year, well not even a year. I mean single Weir's come out only, you know, it's not even 6 months old, it's shooting up the charts. I mean you're a young band, you've got a 15 year old and 17…
Jesse - 18
Interviewer - 18, oh good, alright
Ella - 16!
Interviewer - 16 year old! Alright I feel slightly better, I'm slightly less old. All right um how are you feeling about it all? Is there a lot of pressure involved? I mean you know you sorta started off busking in Violet Town, all of a sudden you're one of Australia's favourite rock groups, what's going on?
Jesse - We love it!
Ella - hehe yeah, it's just been an ace ride, and like lots of people say oh it's been, it's been a rollercoaster but it really has! And…we're just
Jesse - We're loving it!
Ella - We-re loving it yeah…just going with it, just doing gigs and making the album…
Interviewer - Yeah, did you think Weir would be such a enormous single? Like I mean, it just kinda, I mean I know with the radio show I do on Triple M - Homegrown, we were actually one of the first people to play it on radio and the calls we got! Hundreds of calls saying what is that song, who is that band! I mean were you expecting it just to take off like that?
Jesse - We were hoping it to!
Ella - yeh! Like who knows really when you sort of put out a bit of rock…it can go one way or the other and we're just so stoked that it's gone the right way
Interviewer - Definitely. People can catch Killing Heidi at the festivals?
Jesse - I think they'll see a lot more of us, yeah real soon
Interviewer - Yeah definitely
Ella - We'll be out doing the rock road!
Interviewer - The rock n roll thing there! Well not too much of the high life, obviously darling you don't drink, you do but you're only just old enough to, so we'll, we'll put that down there *takes Jesse's Lemon Ruski away from him*
Ella - hahaha, oh? Ok! Hahaha
Interviewer - The video for Weir - is that the first time you've made a video? Cos I mean it's a great video
Ella - Thanks, that was a mad experience
Interviewer - That was really full on
Jesse - It was wild, it was just incredible. We had a really, we had a ball doing it and at the end we had something we really loved. So yeah, it was great.
