12Oct1999 - AUSTRALIA: It's tough picking a winner - ARIAs to be shared <return to top>
By DINO SCATENA.
IF you're looking for a big winner from tonight's 13th ARIA Awards - like Natalie Imbruglia last year or Savage Garden the year before that - then don't bother. The general consensus among music industry insiders is that this year's award winners are the hardest to pick in the event's 13-year history.
Although Newcastle's silverchair have eight nominations to their name, it's unlikely they'll make a clean sweep of it like they did back at the 1995 event when the three lads went home with four of the silver pyramids.
The band faces stiffer competition this year from the likes of Powderfinger, Ben Lee, dance music maestro Josh Abrahams, Spiderbait, Regurgitator and The Living End - all of whom would prove worthy winners across a variety of the most prestigious categories.
As a spectacle, this year's ceremony at the Sydney Entertainment Centre promises to be the biggest ARIA Awards yet.
International guests include The Spice Girls' Mel C, Garbage and Harry Connick jnr.
Natalie Imbruglia's family will accompany her to the awards to watch their girl receive the Outstanding Achievement Award to add to the six trophies she took home last year.
The 24-year-old songstress will also present the ARIA for album of the year.
Imbruglia, who has spent much of this year between America and the UK, working on songs for a new album due out next year, will spend time with her friends and family in Australia before heading back to her base in London.
Performances at tonight's event, which will be televised on free-to-air TV in a delayed telecast, will include songs by multi-nominees Bachelor Girl, Human Nature, Mark Lizotte, Powderfinger, and newcomers Venessa Amorosi and Killing Heidi.
The finale to this year's event will see Brisbane's Regurgitator performing a song from their new album Art called I Want To Be A Nudist.
Tonight's festivities kick off about 5pm. For the first time in several years, tickets have been made available to the public and organisers expect nearly 5000 people to attend.
