29Jun2000 - AUSTRALIA: Killing teen idols <return to top>
By CAMERON ADAMS.
When Killing Heidi singer Ella Hooper stalked around a recent photo session in the US proclaiming, "I'm the evil Britney Spears!" little did she know the photographer's last job was shooting the pop princess.
Life is full of little surprises for the not-so-little band from Violet Town, Victoria.
They recently secured a prestigious overseas contract through record industry giant Universal and had gigs in LA and New York last month. Friends star Courteney Cox-Arquette attended a private show.
Anti-Britney she may be, but 17-year-old Ella has become an antidote pop icon for thousands of Australian teenagers. There are even Ella clones running around the country.
"They freak me out," Ella says. "I can't deal with it."
"There was one at this after-party we did," brother Jesse says. "She was hanging around us. She had exactly the same colour hair extensions as Ella and this red plastic dress on like Ella sometimes performs in."
Ella adds: "She was trying to come on to the guys in the band. Do you think Jesse's going to be attracted to someone who looks like his sister? He's going to be repulsed."
So popular and instantly identifiable are the Hoopers that they've started disguising their famous heads.
"Mum knits us really big beanies," Ella says.
"Dark glasses and a beanie, you're sorted," Jesse says.
"And I'm taking my eyebrow-ring out," Ella says. "That's a scoop. It's infected. I can't get it to get better. I might get something else pierced."
A few months down the track, Killing Heidi have started to reflect on their amazing success.
"It's a time thing," Ella says. "When the album (Reflector) went number one we were so busy, there was so much flying around our heads. Now I'm starting to think, `Hang on a minute ...' But the fact it's been so fast gives you less time to reflect, which keeps you grounded."
The siblings say the UK and US immediately warmed to the band, with Weir due for release in both countries later this year. They enjoyed starting again overseas.
"It was cool to get to that level again and be Killing Heidi, the band no one knows yet," Ella says. "When we played New York we thought, `Killing Heidi are international now,' and the response was so good."
The band came home to a mini-backlash, with a street paper in Melbourne comparing them to Bardot, claiming they were manufactured by their manager and producer Paul Kosky, who dispensed with two of the earlier members of the line-up.
"We got home to that story and it was like, `Welcome back to Australia. Don't succeed,"' Ella says.
"So, if you haven't played in a garage for four years then you're shithouse? We've played in our garage for years, it's just we were also going to high school, not doing gigs. We spent years finding our songwriting formula. We put a lot of effort into planning how we're going to do things. I don't think we should be bagged for that."
The band are already planning their next album, with much of Reflector now several years old. "I was in Year 9 when I was writing most of the songs," Ella says. "Reflector is about going to high school, dealing with bitchy girls, breaking up with boys. Now I'm in a rock band travelling the world. The new lyrics are definitely going to come from a different place, that's for sure."

24Jun2000 - AUSTRALIA: Fans flock to stars <return to top>
By CAMERON ADAMS, music writer.
TWO of Australia's most successful bands met their fans at in-store appearances in Melbourne yesterday.
Victorian rock band Killing Heidi performed four songs, including its No.1 hit Mascara, before signing copies of current single Live Without It.
Fans had queued up for hours to see the band, led by siblings Ella and Jesse Hooper, who have recently returned from a promotional tour of the US.
"It's good to be home," Ella said among chants of "Ella you rock!" and "I love you Ella!" from the crowd.
Many of the band's teenage fans were unable to get into the over-18s show the previous night.
"I know a lot of you couldn't get to see us because of our age, I know the feeling," said Ella, the 17-year-old singer.
Killing Heidi heads to the US next month. Its single Weir is released in the US in late July.
Made-for-TV band Bardot managed to squeeze in two different states in the one day yesterday.
It signed CDs in Launceston at lunchtime, then flew to Melbourne to be at Highpoint by 7pm last night.
Bardot will announce its first national concert tour, set for August, next week.

Killing Heidi @ Selinas full house and they really nailed it - fresh from first US promo trip

15Jun2000 - AUSTRALIA: heidi's smashing time <return to top>
By CAMERON ADAMS.
KILLING Heidi saw their heroes, The Smashing Pumpkins, at a special concert during their recent US trip.
"We saw them live on the day they announced they were splitting up," Jesse Hooper says.
"It was meant to be," Ella Hooper says. "We heard they were splitting up that morning, found they were playing that night and got tickets."
"They've been our favorite band since Siamese Dream," Jesse says.
"It's so hard to think of a world without them," Ella says. "I've always had them there."
The show, both Hoopers say, was "awesome".
"I saw them in Melbourne when they toured Adore and it was crap," Ella says. "This time totally redeemed everything."
Ella says Pumpkins' frontman Billy Corgan remains an inspiration.
"My friend met Billy Corgan and he had the time for her after 12 years in the business," she says.
"That's why I understand when people come up to us that we always make time for them.
"I'd like to be like Billy in 11 years, to still have patience and courtesy."

15Jun2000 - AUSTRALIA: Weir for real <return to top>
By CAMERON ADAMS.
WHEN Killing Heidi singer Ella Hooper stalked around a recent photo session in the US proclaiming, "I'm the evil Britney Spears!" little did she know the photographer's last job was shooting the pop princess.
Life is full of little surprises for the not-so-little band from Violet Town.

Anti-Britney she may be, but 17-year-old Ella has become an antidote pop icon for thousands of Australian teenagers.

"There was one at this after-party we did," brother Jesse says. "She was hanging around us. She had exactly the same color hair extensions as Ella and this red plastic dress on like Ella sometimes performs in."
Ella: "She was trying to come on to the guys in the band ... do you think Jesse's going to be attracted to someone who looks like his sister! He's going to be repulsed!
"But it's flattering the girls at instores who dress like me, like I'm making a fashion statement! I'm the one who was picked on for my fashion at school - people saying, `Haven't you ever seen a hairbrush?' or, `Those clothes look second-hand'. They are second-hand!
"But now there's girls copying me, it's a real turnaround. It's weird there's an `Ella Hooper look'."
So popular and instantly identifiable are the Hoopers that they graciously signed over a dozen autographs during this interview - and all for people 25 or over.
And Jesse's fire-engine red locks caused a mini-stampede at a Savage Garden concert at Melbourne Park in May as a string of fans asked for his autograph.
Accordingly, they've started disguising their famous heads.
"Mum knits us really big beanies," Ella says.
"Dark glasses and a beanie; you're sorted," Jesse says.
"And I'm taking my eyebrow-ring out," Ella says. "That's a scoop! It's infected; I can't get it to get better. I might get something else pierced."
A few months down the track, Killing Heidi have started to reflect on their amazing success.

"It was cool to get to that level again and be Killing Heidi, the band no one knows yet," Ella says. "When we played New York we thought, `Killing Heidi are international now', and the response was so good. It was so refreshing to ... wonder what the crowd were going to think. CONTINUED PAGE 47 "We went on cold, Weir and Mascara meant nothing to them over there, it was good to get a new perspective on our songs."
The band came home to a mini-backlash, with one Melbourne streetpaper comparing them with Bardot; claiming they were manufactured by their manager and producer Paul Kosky, who dispensed with two of the earlier members of the line-up.
"We got home to that story and it was like, `Welcome back to Australia. Don't succeed!' " Ella says.
"So, if you haven't played in a garage for four years then you're s ... house? We've played in our garage for years, it's just we were also going to high school, not doing gigs."
Kosky, who they see as "a fifth member, not a puppet master" often talks of how he could have exploited Ella when he discovered her, at 14, but instead helped the band develop over several years before launching them.
"That's good management," Jesse says.
"Paul just guided us and said, `If you practise, in a couple of years you could become a really good band' and he facilitated us becoming that band," Ella says.
"We spent years finding our songwriting formula. We put a lot of effort into planning how we're going to do things. I don't think we should be bagged for that. We want our songs to have the best shot possible. We're not going to handicap our music by doing anything sub par.
"I do take criticism on board," she says. "Some artists get bitter and twisted about what people say and get defensive about their `art'.
"I love my music but I'm not going to fend everyone off from it; it's out there in the public arena. I want people to make a judgment on it and hopefully like it."
The band are already planning their next album, with much of Reflector now several years old.
"I was in Year Nine when I was writing most of the songs," Ella says. "Reflector is about going to high school, dealing with bitchy girls, breaking up with boys ...
"Now I'm in a rock band travelling the world; the new lyrics are definitely going to come from a different place, that's for sure."
Jesse: "Musically it's more extreme, the soft songs are way softer, the hard songs more hard."
Ella: "It's going to be more dramatic."
The pair are also planning what to spend their looming pay cheques on.
"I want a place to live," Jesse says. "I'm currently staying at several friends' houses."
"I want to get a motorbike, a dirtbike," Ella says. "I'm being influenced by my boyfriend; he's a dirtbike rider."
You can't imagine Britney hooning on a dirtbike, but Ella fesses up to a hidden love.
"I have a secret love for pop," she says. "I couldn't resist dancing to some of the Spice Girls' songs and Britney's Baby One More Time is the best pop song. I hate them morally and it doesn't do it for me on a cerebral level. But in a shake-your-rump way, you can't help yourself.
"It's weird because, in America, all their pop stars like Britney and Mandy Moore are way under age. I used to be the young one - and my age was a big deal here - but in America they're giving 13-year-olds record contracts, which is precisely what we avoided.
"We get bagged because we're young, but do people want us to sit here and wait until we're 20 so we can be a viable rock band and not seen as a teenpop band? No! I don't want to wait. I'm ready now!" Reflector (Roadshow) out now. Killing Heidi, Palace, June 22, Hallam Hotel, June 25.

11Jun2000 - AUSTRALIA: Stars out to save lives <return to top>
AUSTRALIAN celebrities are rallying support for an innovative program aimed at curbing the nation's alarming youth suicide rate.
The scheme organised by the Wesley Mission, called LifeForce, is under threat unless around $100,000 is urgently raised.
Stars honoured by the TV program This Is Your Life will join forces this month to raise funds at a gala dinner at Darling Harbour.
Among those attending will be Oscar-winning author Thomas Keneally, Sir James Hardy, Janine Shepherd, Gabi Hollows, David Atkins, Ron Barassi and Ian Chappell.
The entertainment line-up includes Killing Heidi, Leonardo's Bride, Normie Rowe, Grace Knight and pop newcomers Bardot.
The event is the brainchild of actor Paula Duncan, who lost a close friend to suicide a decade ago.
"It has really never left my mind. I was riddled with guilt, anger and a whole lot of emotions," Duncan said.
Donations for Life Force can be made at www.wesleylifeforce.org.

09Jun2000 - AUSTRALIA: View to a KILL <return to top>
By Noel Mengel.
Killing Heidi dive in at the deep end with their shot at fame in the US. Noel Mengel reports.

THE record company battle to sign Killing Heidi in the United States has been won by the new label 3:33. Never heard of them? You will. An unknown Australian band doesn't get a review in the LA Times the day after its first show in that city unless someone is well-connected. And 3:33 is, since it is run by film director Tom Shadyac, (Liar Liar, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Patch Adams) and is backed by the film and movie giant Universal. Shadyac plans to direct a clip for the band and no doubt their music will crop up on soundtracks to his films. Killing Heidi have just returned from a four-week trip to the US where they signed the deal, pressed the flesh and played shows in New York and Los Angeles. Their first single there will be Weir, even if no one in the US has a clue what a weir is. "It doesn't matter," says Ella Hooper, possibly Australia's best-known 17-year-old, smiling at the thought of the distance her song inspired by swimming at the local water hole has travelled.
"Lots of people in Australia didn't know what a weir was either, although of course me being a country girl I do." As does the rest of the country now, since the band's first album Reflector debuted at No. 1 in March and has now sold more than 140,000 copies. "I'm pinching myself because it hasn't even dropped out of the top 10 yet," Hooper says. "Having it debut so strongly was totally surreal but I'm just so proud that we've had this consistently successful album. That's more important to me than it debuting at No. 1. "I hate to think about the numbers of people because it freaks me out but it's the best feeling to know there are so many people who want to have this record in their lounge room." The band will consider recording their next album in the US but the environment they record in is more important to Ella than the locality. As you might expect from a country girl, she likes her space. "It's important for me that we record in an environment that's really comfy," Ella says. "Reflector was mostly recorded in a house in Melbourne and I find big studios are sterile and cold with all that glass and polished wood. It's hard to get passionate about a song in a place like that." Killing Heidi were groomed for three years before the release of Reflector and like most musicians are jumping out of their skin to work on new material. Do Ella and her songwriting brother Jesse have a big backlog of tunes, then? "I wish," she laughs. "I've got a huge catalogue of bits of paper, diaries full of stuff. I've got a few of them because I'm always leaving them somewhere, one at my mum's, one on the road, one at my place in Melbourne. Maybe 25 percent of that might turn into songs and the rest is just incoherent ramblings.
"They can be embarrassing though. You read something a month later and say: `I'm glad I've written that down. I can learn from that. And you rip it up and throw it away." Although, hopefully, not the page with the words to a potential No. 1. Killing Heidi play The Palladium, Gold Coast, tonight with Rhubarb and the Daisycutters.

08Jun2000 - AUSTRALIA: Killer contract <return to top>
By Patrick McDonald, Simon Yeaman.
HIT Australian band Killing Heidi recently signed an international record deal with a company called 3:33 Music. The head of that label happens to be Tom Shadyac, who is better known as the film director behind such movie successes as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Nutty Professor, Liar, Liar and Patch Adams.
While Killing Heidi was in the United States recently, it gave a special performance at Shadyac's new house in Pasadena for 3:33 staff and friends.
Among the celebrities invited, the band was surprised and happy to see Friends star Courtney Cox up the front and moshing away!

06Jun2000 - AUSTRALIA: The star finders deserve a gong, too <return to top>
By Ben Hart.
YOUNG ROCK darlings Killing Heidi are riding high in the charts. But would we have heard of them at all were it not for radio station Triple J?
The national youth broadcaster should be getting far more kudos for discovering Australia's next big musical export.
The siblings from Violet Town in rural Victoria came to public attention after placing equal first in Triple J's Unearthed competition for the Benalla area. The success of Killing Heidi provides a kind of double vindication for the radio station, which branched out into rural areas in 1994.
The move was called a waste of taxpayers' money. One federal MP claimed rural youth listened only to country and western music.
For me, Ella and Jesse Hooper, who say the arrival of Triple J in their town encouraged them to follow their musical urges, are proof that the ABC, and Triple J, are still well worth eight cents a day.
