Set in 1988 this novel introduces us to Charlie Bell a young lad who is mourning the death of his father. Withdrawn and acting out he is sent by his mother to stay with his grandparents for the summer. His grandfather is a tough, no-nonsense fellow who expects Charlie to help out around the place and not mope about or lose himself in his comics. At the Boys and Girls Club he sees his cousin, Roxie, who is a champ at basketball. She soon has Charlie joining in and taking part. With his grandad’s tough love, his cousin Roxie and best friend CJ Charlie begins the healing process…

This prequel to The Crossover will have readers engrossed in Charlie’s life. Backed up with strong female characters this novel in verse shows the power of friends and family in dealing with loss. Charlie’s recovery and journey into adulthood is deftly told and the various 1980’s references and comic pages interspersed add to the story. A great and easy read for 12+.
