The TUXEDO JUNCTION Charity Ball
Raising Funds for Cancer Research
TUEXDO JUNCTION is a charity ball in aid of The Cancer Council Victoria. Artbre Consulting together with the TUEXDO JUNCTION Advisory Board
is producing this event in order to raise funds that will enable The Cancer Council Victoria to support two research programs. The Cancer Council Victoria supports research in Victorian universities, hospitals and medical research institutes. Funds for grants are raised through events such as TUXEDO JUNCTION.
TUEXDO JUNCTION is being produced because over the past few yeas some of our friends and family members have been touched by cancer; even if it was just one or a few, it is too many. This event is not about any one person specifically. Whilst our love and thoughts are with our family
and friends our determination and efforts are directed towards assisting those who will one day find a cure.
The event will be run within the ethics code as outlined by The Cancer Council Victoria.
The funds from Tuxedo Junction 2007 will form The Tuxedo Junction 2007 Grant and The Seeley Gratitude Grant.

The two grants will support both of the following projects.
Liver Tumors and the Renin Angiotensin System
Over 12,000 cases of bowel cancer are diagnosed annually in Australia. Approximately 50% of these patients will develop spread of the cancer to
the liver (metastases) and this is the major cause of death. The treatment
is limited and most patients are only suitable for chemotherapy which is at
best palliative in nature. An alternative approach is inhibition of the formation of blood vessels that allow the liver metastases to grow. There is now accumulating evidence, that the renin angiotensin system (RAS) of the liver may inhibit cancer growth and that drugs that inhibit the RAS, commonly used in the treatment of hypertension, may be an alternative treatment.
Patient Support Services For People With Advanced Cancer
People who are confronting an advanced cancer diagnosis face a unique and complex range of concerns. The person is understandably worried for their future and may also have family or relationship matters to address and financial or practical concerns. Sometimes the person’s life partner or family may not be in the best position to assist their loved one as they too are adjusting to a difficult situation. The Cancer Council's experience in conducting cancer discussion forums, in groups and via telephone and internet link-ups has shown that people gain enormous benefit from being connected to other people who are undergoing similar life experiences. In recognition of the significant issues that confront people with advanced cancer, funds from Tuxedo Junction will be used to establish a specialised advanced cancer telephone and internet group support service. It is in this way that people with advanced cancer can be connected to each other. These services will be coordinated and overseen by an oncology nurse who is able to provide practical advice and access to further resources.
