H.M.A.S. Hobart D-39, was built by the Defoe Shipbuilding Company, Bay City, Michigan, U.S.A. and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy on 18th of December 1965.

With a displacement of 4,500 tons, the ship had acrew of 20 officers and 313 sailors.

Commanded by Captain G.R. Griffiths DSC, Hobart was the first Australian destroyer to be sent to the war in Vietnam.
