INTRODUCTION

There has been no systematic basis for the selection of the various Brabyns included in this pot pourri of history, anecdotes and legends. Individuals and their stories were included because their tales were readily available, and that they fitted some vague criteria of being:

·       Remarkable People - The life and times of remarkable people, those who have shown that they possessed qualities above those of normal folk, should be included. These qualities need not only include those who qualify conventionally - rogues may also be remarkable.

·       People with Remarkable Experiences - Not every one can be exceptional, but ordinary people can experience something out of the ordinary in their otherwise humdrum life.

·        Names to Drop in Casual Conversation - Most of us are snobs to some extent. This may be particularly so if, like most of our ancestors, we have not climbed very far up the social ladder. To some such a classification of names to drop in casual conversation may seem frivolous, but family histories should not be merely the recording of begats and begots. Family histories should be interesting and some may feel that gentle levity can add to that interest.

This does not set out to be an ultimate authority, but a place where experiences of fellow Brabyns can be centrally recorded. The more such information is available, the more one can appreciate the accomplishments of our forebears. Doubtless, any reader of this Miscellanea will be able to point out glaring omissions, inappropriate admissions and errors in the information recorded.

I therefore welcome submissions from other Brabyns on any material presented here, references that are included in this collection, or personal histories they feel should have a presence. Such submissions would preferably include some third-party reference that lends some credence to any assertions made, else they could be fiction. Illustrations and photographs add colour to otherwise dry prose.

But please note, the inclusion or exclusion of any submission is at my absolute, subjective discretion.
