DAVID W. MUNDELL MEDAL
FOR contribution to the law through legal writing
Toronto 27 January 2000 –
Attorney General Jim Flaherty today presented Professor Gerald Fridman with the
David W. Mundell Medal for legal writing at Canadian Bar Association–Ontario’s
(CBAO) Annual Institute of Continuing Legal Education.
“The award salutes
Professor Fridman for his outstanding contribution to legal writing over five
decades, which is remarkable for its breadth and depth,” said Flaherty.
“Professor Fridman has shared his comprehensive knowledge of the legal system
through extensive publication in numerous areas of law. His selection as this
year’s recipient does honour to this award.”
“Professor Fridman has made
an outstanding contribution to the understanding of Ontario’s laws,” said
Ontario Chief Justice Roy McMurtry, Chair of the Selection Committee. “Through
his 12 books, and more than 55 published articles, Professor Fridman is an
often cited source in legal circles.”
Gerald Fridman, Q.C., a
Professor Emeritus with the Faculty of Law, University of Western Ontario, for
25 years has published extensively in Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand
and the United States. He has authored book reviews for seven law journals and
reviews including the Canadian Bar Review. His books include Law of Agency,
currently in its 7th edition, and Sale of Goods in Canada, now in its 4th
edition.
“CBAO is proud to host this
award presentation,” said CBAO President Susan McGrath. “Our Annual Institute
of Continuing Legal Education particularly encourages legal writing as more
than 100 publications were written for the Institute.”
CBAO’s Annual Institute
brings lawyers from across the province together to attend 19 continuing legal
education programs that update them on the latest developments in different
areas of law. CBAO is Ontario’s largest voluntary association consisting of
more than 16,000 lawyers, judges and law students.
The Attorney General
thanked Chief Justice McMurtry for chairing the selection committee consisting
of: Richard J. Balfour, partner with the Toronto law firm Torys; James B. Love
Q.C., partner with the Toronto law firm, Love & Whalen; Mark Freiman,
Assistant Deputy Attorney General, Legal Services Division, Ministry of the
Attorney General and Alison Harvison Young, Dean of Queen’s University Law
School.
The Mundell Medal is presented annually to an Ontario writer who has made a distinguished contribution to the law through legal writing. The Medal honors David W. Mundell, the first Director of the Ministry of the Attorney General’s Constitutional Law Branch who was widely recognized as one of Canada’s foremost constitutional scholars.
