HELEN MUNDELL

PHOTOGRAPHER

Freelance photographer Helen Mundell is a former newspaper reporter and editor, who is spending her retirement years photographing the world. She has been on all seven continents and has enjoyed hiking in both Nepal and New Zealand. Born in Colorado, for 31 years she has lived in Ithaca, New York, the subject of many of her fall foliage and other nature photographs.

Mundell was a published finalist in Photographer's Forum magazine's Best of Photography contests in 1995 and 1996, with photos of a trio of Kenyan elephants and a sunset scene of mountains and ice floes in Antarctica. She has written and illustrated many travelogues for newspapers over the years. For the past five years Mundell has sold reproductions as well as notecards featuring her travel and nature photographs. Her work has been exhibited at Ithaca camera stores. She is also a regular featured speaker at the Ithaca Photo Club and the Ithaca Senior Citizen Center, where she presents illustrated travel lectures.

Mundell has been interested in photography since her days as a cub reporter when she was sent out with newspaper photographers to do feature stories. She constantly badgered the photographers to tell her what they were doing and how. But she had no desire to become a newspaper photographer, not wanting to face being sent out to cover a gory fatal accident.

Among Mundell's favorite memories of her travels is the morning in Nepal when she was coming down a rough trail, ski-pole-cum-walking-stick in one hand and hanging onto the porter, Vishnu, with the other. "Two Nepalese girls passed us, tripping over the rocks as lightly as if they had been walking down Main Street. They said something to the porter as they passed, and he mumbled something in return. They continued on, giggling uproariously. The guide was just behind us, so I waited for him to catch up and asked him, 'H.S., were those girls teasing Vishnu because he was holding hands with a grandma?' 'Yes!' H.S. roared in laughter, slapping his knee. I suspected that he was as amused at my 'getting it,' as he was at the girls' comments."
