Mundell has been interested in photography since her days as a cub reporter
when she was sent out with newspaper photographers to do feature stories. She
constantly badgered the photographers to tell her what they were doing and how.
But she had no desire to become a newspaper photographer, not wanting to face
being sent out to cover a gory fatal accident.
Among Mundell's favorite memories of her travels is the morning in Nepal when
she was coming down a rough trail, ski-pole-cum-walking-stick in one hand and
hanging onto the porter, Vishnu, with the other. "Two Nepalese girls
passed us, tripping over the rocks as lightly as if they had been walking down
Main Street. They said something to the porter as they passed, and he mumbled
something in return. They continued on, giggling uproariously. The guide was
just behind us, so I waited for him to catch up and asked him, 'H.S., were
those girls teasing Vishnu because he was holding hands with a grandma?' 'Yes!'
H.S. roared in laughter, slapping his knee. I suspected that he was as amused
at my 'getting it,' as he was at the girls' comments."
