GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

Description of Employment
1. A RAA Pro NCO skilled in the field of enforcement of military law and control of military matter.
General Outline of Duties
2. a. Operation:
- Performs military police patrols outside unit areas to assist maintenance of morale and good discipline for the prevention and detection of crime and apprehension of offenders.
- Assists soldiers both on an off duty.
- Carries out investigations.
- Controls military traffic and road movement.
- Maintenance. No applicable.
- Administrative / Clerical:
- Understands orders and instructions pertaining to maintenance of military discipline outside unit areas.
- Has knowledge of military law.
- Compiles written reports.
- Administrative duties increase with rank and include functions normally required of any NCO acting in a specialist NCO position.
- Supervision:
- Supervises other soldiers in the course of military police duty.
(2) Supervises soldiers in his custody.
(3) Supervision of other military police increases with rank.
- Instruction. As an NCO, must be able to instruct other soldiers, particularly offenders against orders and instructions.
f. First Aid. Must be skilled in the treatment of minor injuries and in resuscitation.

Selection Requirements
- Prior Trade Qualifications. A trained soldier selected from any Corps.
5. Security Classification. PRIMARY, but higher classification may be required in certain establishment positions.
6. Civil and Military Record. Must have a clean civil and military record.
- Minimum Educational Standard. ACE3 or equivalent.
- Medical Standard and Physical Requirements:
- See ‘PULHEEMS Administrative Pamphlet’.
- Minimum height – 5 ft 9 ins.
- Build in proportion to height.
- Requires near and far vision to observe actions of other persons, to examine soldiers taken into custody, detect prohibited articles, and to permit driving of all unit vehicles.
- Requires full use of upper and lower limbs to use physical force to effect arrest and restraint of offenders.
- Requires normal colour vision.
- Aptitude Assessment:
- Requires dependability to ensure compliance with orders and instructions.
- Requires attentiveness to perform military police patrols in the prevention and detection of crime and the apprehension of offenders.
- Requires emotional control and temperament suitable for the performance of military police duties in the public eye.
- Requires leadership and self-confidence to obtain respect obedience from the soldiers when orders are given by him.
- Requires irreproachable integrity and capacity to encourage morale and good discipline by example to others.
- Must have the capacity to act on his own initiative, in the execution of what he considers to be his duty, rather than await direction from higher authority.
Working Conditions
- Physical:
- Required to remain alert and attentive for long periods of day and night shift duty without relief.
- Required to perform duties in all kinds of weather and conditions both on foot, in a vehicle or on a motor cycle.
- Requires the capacity to protect himself physically and effect restraint and arrest of an offender.
- Special Factors:
- Is required to maintain a high standard of self-discipline, appearance and behaviour in order to earn the respect of soldiers and public alike.
- Is required to be a skilled driver and motor cyclist.
- Is required to maintain a high degree of conscientiousness in his approach to duties, without unnecessary harshness.
- Stresses:
- Performance of military police duty constantly in the public eye imposes mental stress peculiar only to this kind of work.
- Constant and continuous requirement for emotional control and self-discipline also imposes stress beyond that borne by the average NCO.
- Consequences of Error:
- Error or failure to observe orders and instructions, particularly where apprehension is concerned cannot be tolerated.
- Error in traffic control and operation of vehicles could cause loss of life and serious damage to property and therefore cannot be tolerated.
14. Occupational Hazards. Military Police are subject to constant shift work seven days a week performed alertly and in all weathers and conditions. Relaxation on duty is not possible.
Sequence of Army Training
15. The sequence of Army training for this trade is:
- Basic training.
- Corps indoctrination.
- On the job training.
- Trade training and testing as ECN T315.
- On the job training.
- Advanced trade training in ECN T315.

Career Planning
- Progression is normally as follows:
- Volunteer transfers from other Corps normally as Private or Corporal.
- Minimum rank on establishment for ECN T315 in Corporal. This is commensurate with authority, and powers vested in Military Police.
- Maximum rank is WO1 (RSM), ECN 358, or Investigator, T315.
- Structure - WO1 to WO2 – 1 : 2.
WO2 to SGT - 1 : 3.
SGT to CPL - 1 : 6.

- Knowledge. Requires basic knowledge of:
- Conduct of Provost personnel.
- Organisation and functioning of his unit and Corps.

- Offences and framing charges.
- Forms and methods of arrest.
- Reports and statements.
- Evidence.
- Map reading.
- Camouflage and security.
- Instructions for drivers of mechanical vehicles.
- Prisoner of war and refugee control.
- Riot control and disturbances.
- Skill. Requires to be:
- Skilled in handling of weapons of his unit and use of firearms generally.
- Skilled driver of unit vehicles and motor cycles.
- Skilled writer of written reports.
- Skilled in the taking of statements.
- Skilled in voice procedure and use of radio.
- Skilled in treatment of minor injuries.
- Skilled in self-protection.
- Skilled in traffic control and route signing.
PART 3
TRADE TEST SUMMARY
Trade Test Authority
1. Normally the RAA Pro School or other authority nominated by the PM and approved by DMT.
Requirements
2. The candidate must pass at a junior NCO’s course at the RAA Pro School in Subjects A, B and C, for promotion to Corporal, as prescribed in the Promotion Manual.
Qualification
3. a. Subjects A, B and C, E Classification or better.
b. Licence to drive. Codes B1, B2, B3 and B4.
4. Personnel previously qualified as Provost WO/NCO, ECN 685, are deemed qualified as ECN T315.
