Alexander the Great: Reckless Conqueror
This is my latest book and it is part of the black dog books series
The Mystery of History. These books bring the past to life
in an interesting and entertaining way. This one is about Alexander
the Great.
Alexander had a short but exceptional life. He was king of Macedonia
by the age of 20. Then he led an army of 50 000 men on one of the most
amazing journeys in history. He conquered most of the known world. He
defeated armies five times the size of his own, leading the most dangerous
charges himself. More than 2000 years later, he is still recognised
as one of the greatest generals of all time. But many thousands of people
were killed or enslaved as a result of his desire for conquest.
There are two sides to Alexander's story though. Western history presents
him as a hero, but in Persia he was an invader known as Alexander the
Accursed. Was he a brilliant and heroic warrior or a ruthless and reckless
tyrant?
In this book, I try to find out just want it was that made Alexander
so great.
Reviews
“The research here is prodigious and the story set out in fine
detail--there is much here to inform an adult reader too...This is an
exciting and informative read, conjuring up the ancient world in a most
satisfying way.”
Australian Book Review Aug 2005
“Wilkinson takes the risk of following a fragmentary
first person narrative by Alexander with explanatory text. It works.”
