The National War Memorial of Victoria was built as a permanent memorial to the 18,000 Victorians who did not return from the First World War. After the Second World War the Forecourt with its flags and statuary were commissioned to commemorate the lives lost in that war. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth lit the Perpetual Flame on 28 February 1954. On November 11 at dawn every year, thousands gather at the Shrine for a very moving service to remember the fallen. |
Established in 1846, the gardens cover some 32 acres. The gardens provide a popular place for families to picnic and feed the ducks, swans or sparrows while more energetic individuals can be seen running the fitness circuit around the perimeter. |

Zoo is Australia's oldest: it opened on this
site in Royal Park in 1862. Significant historic features
such as the design of the Main Walk and an early 20th
Century menagerie exhibit are preserved in an historic
zone so visitors will be able to measure the great
improvements which have been achieved. More than 350
animal species from Australia and around the world are on
view just 4 km from the centre of Melbourne, in a botanic
garden setting of 55 acres / 22 hectares.
