drumming to make a whole that is rather astounding. Comparisons I can draw are perhaps Edge of Sanity and shades of Pan Thy Monium. Obsidian Records deliver the goods!)

(Finally Australia's OOTV release their debut album. Given their long history it's not surprising that this is, in my opinion, a masterpiece of dark art. Sinister black metal sound
with many death metal leanings. The many death and black vocals styles make for a real journey into a bleak world, laden with intricate and emotive riffing.
A real gem that rarely comes along)

(After 2 demo's, QLD's Defamer release their debut album. Dark death metal, more in the old 90's underground style. Never straying from brutal intensity,
but never too repetitive either. Lots of crafty riffing and guitar solo's, with ever shifting rhythms no doubt inspired from the last 20 years of real death metal!)
***IRONWOOD...."Storm Over Sea" - CD
(The second full length is here from Sydney's Pagan/ Folk/ Black/ Death Metal-hybrid masters. I say masters because they have been at it for quite a long time now,
and with this album they have truely honed many aspects of the style to near perfection. The heavy stuff on this is most impressive, at times complex and twisted, and at times moody and epic.
Very layered and intricate passages allow for all instruments to shine and impress equally in a way I find to be organic and purposeful, not just wankery!!!
However I feel some of the purely acoustic and vocal-laden songs may put a few people off due to the vocal style. But there is more than enough heaviness to counteract this.
***IRONWOOD.....":Fire:Water:Ash:" - CD
(The debut album of Sydney's Ironwood is here. Their brand of elemental nature worship is immediately evident, if not by the album's title, then by the music.
The pure folkish elements are set forth by the many acoustic guitar and organic clean vocal tracks spread over this album. But this folkish style carries over
into their heavy, often speedy, black metalish songs aswell. Given that 3 of the 4 members perform vocals, you can expect a nice variation of vocals throughout)
***IRONWOOD....."s/t" - Pro Demo CD/ EP
(A relatively new band hailing from Sydney, Australia deliver this unique glimpse into their sound and concept. Described by themselves as dark, earthy
and transcendental music, I would add that it is reminiscent of the folky, Scandinavian style of black metal, with a healthy dose of Australian originality.
Clean and dirty vocals, fast and slow moments, clean and heavy sections make this an interesting listen extremely worthy of the worlds' attention)

(The Cave has picked up one from the vaults here....in the 90's, Nocturnal were THE only South Australian one-man Black Metal band in existence, and possibly
in Australia. Listening to this disc now, recorded in 1997, one has all the old feelings return. A sound reminiscent of Burzum and early Dark Throne among many others,
this is recommended to all Black Metal fiends wanting a taste of old underground occultism!!!!)

(The second opus from Nocturnal recorded in 1999. Once again, similair attributes to the earlier release, but more meditative and cold. A precusor to the
'Suicidal' Black Metal style of this era. The morbid vibe on these recordings just will not die!!!! Classic.)

(Last and hard to get copies of this classic split featuring Martire tracks recorded between 1997 and 1999, and Throneum tracks recorded in 2003.

their 7" plus 2 extra tracks.)

***FUNERAL MOTH....."s/t" - CD
(Weird Doom from Japan. Featuring Makoto from Weird Truth Prod's on guitar/ vocals. Clean, tight sound...heavy, sparse and morbid as fuck.
This is some of the bleakest Funeral Doom heard for a while. Snail pace with droning low death vox not unlike Disembowelment. Highly recommended
to all funeral doom fans. With some Japanese weirdness thrown in. Bleak, bleak, bleak.
***ATARAXIE....."Anhedonie" - CD
(The second album from French Doom masters. Great quality production. A nice development from their first release. Still maintaining their death/ doom style,
with perhaps more variety this time. A few faster moments only add to the listenability. )
***QUERCUS....."Postvorta" - CD
(Avantgarde Death and Doom like only Czech bands can do. Why are Czech bands so obscure? The first track is a great epic Doom track, 20 minutes long, touching on sounds of Unholy
and Evoken. Great stuff. As it moves on it keeps these styles but seems to add some more clean vocals - male and female- and go in some weird atmospheric directions.
Like I said, I can only explain it as that weird Czech feel. Imagine Root and Master's Hammer doing some weird Doom.)
***A.D. MASSACRE...."Insignificance" - CD
(Here's some fresh blood from Australian shores definately worth checking out. One of those death metal bands that is fresh, in that their music
is creative, it moves, with classic riffs, all the while maintaining a pure death metal feel with no gay or cheesy shit. Not always easy to pull off! Reminds
me of some of the classic underground 90's death metal like Seance, Dismember, Deceased etc. 32 minutes.)

(The debut MCD from South Australia's Storm Breeder! Classic, ripping thrash/ speed and heavy metal with extremely tight riffing, darkly melodic overtones throughout,
and pure, undeniable aggression! Plenty of dual guitar interaction and tight-as-hell drumming. Shades of At The Gates, Late 80's/ Early 90's Megadeth, Late 80's/ Early 90's Metallica
and many others from this era. 36 minutes including the most competent cover of Metallica's 'One' you're ever likely to hear!)

(The debut full length from Adelaide, South Australia's Quasar. It's great to see fresh blood streaming forth from under the Southern skies once again! Although
the musicians behind this enigmatic band have been involved in bands for the last 10 years or more. That is to say this is a professional and experienced metal
excursion indeed. The basis of their music is an epic black metal style, perhaps similair to Summoning, Enslaved and Bethlehem in ways, but there are many
layers added - lots of acoustic guitars mixed in with heavy, percussion, vocal variation, all engulfed in definate 70's Pink Floyd-esque sensibility. Fuckin' great!!!)

(The debut MCD from Sydney death metal extremists. Reminds one of mid-era Death (musically) in parts, and this is great considering Australia is lacking bands that can pull off this
highly to people searching for REAL Death Metal that is not generic and boring in the least. It's amazing that three songs can reveal so much musical aspiration!)
(New release from this Belgian horde - and what a fucking release!!! A mix of something between latter Dark Throne, Tulus and Autopsy, this has such a classic,
original and headbanging vibe we simply had to stock it. So much metal integrity in sound and style, and the production is big, powerful and rawly organic.
The variation throughout the album is what keeps this from being just another album in this modern age of underground shit, just like an old Autopsy album.....)
(New from US's Paragon Records. I can definately hear shades of Asphyx and Morgoth in this. Picture those bands with a more early Katatonia-styled atmosphere and you are getting close.
Being a fan of all three of these said bands, I can safely recommend them highly!)
