Welcome to The Purple Owl
This site is a tribute to the incredible series of games produced in the late 80s and early 90s by Liverpool company Psygnosis.
Not all are classics, but one thing they do share is an attention to detail and consistent visual style that was unmatched at the time. Everything from the packaging and advertising to the breathtaking introduction sequences and in-game graphics and sound were of the highest quality and created the impression of a Psygnosis universe that was at once mysterious and enticing.
This site is not an attempt to catalogue every Psygnosis release (other sites do this better) but rather to look at a few core games that best exemplified the 'Psygnosis style'. I have chosen to concentrate on the games Brataccas, Barbarian, Ballistix, Obliterator, Chrono Quest, Menace, Blood Money, Shadow of the Beast 1 & 2, Awesome and Agony. Other titles will be added as information comes to hand. If you are interested in the history of this amazing company, I have complied some information here.
Psygnosis was one of the first game developers for the Commodore Amiga personal computer in 1985. They continued to support the Amiga until the collapse of Commodore in 1994. Although many games were simultaneously released on the Atari ST and other machines, this site focuses only on the Amiga versions. A short history of the Commodore Amiga is included for reference.
If you have any information that you think would be useful for the site, please contact me. If you worked on any of the games mentioned I would love to hear from you.
Roger Dean is the artist responsible for the package artwork on many Psygnosis games. His excellent site can be found here.
