Hopping on ASEAN bandwagon

THE Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is getting on the ASEAN Economic Zone (AEZ) bandwagon by taking more than 100 staff members on a discovery tour of Vietnam and Lao PDR in May and June.

The AEZ, due to launch in 2015, aims at achieving greater economic integration among the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as enhancing the flow of travellers within the region. While trade expansion is the obvious primary goal of the zone, travel facilitation across borders also rank high on ASEAN national agendas as countries look to stimulate their economies through tourism, logistics development and bustling border trade.

In order to learn about the opportunities and pitfalls of the AEZ in relation to tourism promotion, TAT is organizing two overland trips: Vietnam during May 4-9 and Lao PDR during June 1-6.

Previous staff outings have been to local destinations only. Mr. Suraphon Svetasreni, TAT Governor, stated, “WE want our staff to really get to know our ASEAN neighbours who are important tourist source markets as well as main destinations for visitors from third countries. There is much tourism potential for in these areas when Thailand enters the AEZ, but we must be ready to take advantage of that by 2015.”

Both trips commence in Bangkok and enter Indochina through Thailand’s Northeast. The Vietnam trip goes through Mukdahan Province in Thailand, Savannakhet in Lao PDR and then to World Heriage Sites in Hue and Hoi An and to the major port of Danang. The Lao PDR trip goes through Nong Khai Province into Vientiane, then on to Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage city.

Mr. Suraphon added, “We are going not solely for marketing purposes, but we also want to gain closer relations with our Vietnamese and Lao friends. Tourism is always a two-way business, so we are keen on making the trips which we hope will spur further intra-regional travel.”

Millions of Emirates fans around the world can now connect and engage with the airline directly through Facebook. Incredibly, in its first two weeks Emirates was also established as the number one airline on Facebook in the MENA region.

The Emirates Facebook page soft launch occurred on 25th March in preparation for the April 2 launch of the airlines’ new global brand platform ‘Hello Tomorrow’.  A series of teaser quizzes highlighting vignettes from one of the new TV commercials were featured, attracting more than 3330 likes and 1300 comments over a one week period.

The page allows fans to interact with the brand through Facebook exclusive content on the timeline feature, apply for jobs through the careers app or find out more about sponsorships through its sports and culture tab. Fans can also look at how Emirates has grown since its early days in 1985 through Facebook’s milestone feature – from its launch with just two aircraft, to its current status as one of the world’s fastest growing airlines.

“Emirates new brand platform ‘Hello Tomorrow’ is connecting people and cultures by creating relevant and meaningful experiences and Facebook is a proven mechanism to do just that,” said Sir Maurice Flanagan, Executive Vice Chairman, Emirates Airline and Group.

“Our Facebook page is part of the vision we have for the future growth of the airline, so it’s very encouraging to see that the page has broken records in our first few weeks and is being received so positively by our fans who are engaging with us.”

The Emirates Facebook page was set up to support the company’s evolution from a travel brand to a global lifestyle brand. The Facebook page will look at building stronger relationships with existing fans and encourage more people to become Emirates fans through interactions.
