THE AQUARIUM SOCIETY OF VICTORIA INC PROFILE
The Society was formed in 1933 with the object of promoting interest in the study of Aquatic life in the domestic situation.
The initial meeting was held at the Exhibition Building on 17th July 1933 and was opened by Mr Green of the then existing Melbourne Aquarium.
Twelve members enrolled the first night. Interest and initiative grew as more and more exotic fishes were bred successfully. Meetings continued at the Exhibition Buildings and were later held in the homes of members.
Increasing membership made it necessary for larger meeting places, thus the venue of meetings changed from private homes to the North Melbourne Town Hall and thence to the National Herbarium where meetings were held for over a decade.
On May 22nd 1971 the Society relocated its headquarters to its own premises at the Grant Street site which it had purchased and renovated in 1970.
Our Society is proud of the achievements it has made in developing interest and extending knowledge of fishkeeping through its meetings, publications and displays.
