George Broomhead
George James Broomhead was born around 1804, the son of George Broomhead and Mary Greaves who were from Yorkshire. He was living in Nottinghamshire at the time he committed his crime.
He was tried at the Lancaster Preston Assizes on 12 Aug 1843 and sentenced to 10 years transportation for Horse Stealing, property of Mr. Bush in Lancaster.
He embarked on the Marion (1) on 20 Nov 1843, which departed London on 9 Dec 1843 and arrived in Hobart on 4 Apr 1844.
According to his convict report, he was Protestant, and could read and write. He was 5'7" tall, with brown hair, brown beard, hazel eyes, a large head, ruddy complexion, broad face, broad forehead, medium length nose, medium width mouth and a broad chin. He had a sun tattooed on his left elbow, a mole on his right arm, a mole on his breast and a dent in his chest.
He received his Ticket of Leave on 17 April 1849. But in Hobart on 17 August 1850, he was fined £4/18/- for cruelly beating a horse. On 14 October he was convicted of stealing £20, the property of Stephen Parkhouse, and on the same date was charged with resisting a constable in the execution of his duty. For these he was fined £1.
His Conditional Pardon was approved on 8 April 1851.
On 2 July 1850 he and Sarah Lambert made an application for permission to marry. The permission was obviously granted because on 22nd July 1850, he and Sarah married in Hobart.
George and Sarah's first child, Caroline Anne, was born 31 August, 1851 at Clarence.
Some time after 1855 they moved to Ralph's Bay, where George Henry was born, and some time before December 1858 they moved to the Brighton area where Mary Ann Was born.
George died of severe diarrhoea in 1872, and his hospital report is recorded as follows:
