Ken and Jocelyn Elliott
Ken and Jocelyn began the work in 1972 when they arrived in Burkina Faso (then called Upper Volta)
and negotiated with the government to begin building an NGO* hospital in the remote
northern town of Djibo.
Ken is the only surgeon and is on 24-hr, 7-day call for all cases that turn up, as well as
in charge of the administration of the whole organisation.
Jocelyn conducts all the Laboratory investigations for the hospital as well as conducting the
daily administration of the organisation.

Peter and Gloria Lawrence
Peter and Gloria finished their latest 2-and-a-bit year stay in Djibo and returned in February 2006
to Nowra (NSW), Australia after over 6 years of service to the hospital. A fantastic effort by a
fantastic couple who are deserving a fantastic time with family back home!
Peter has been involved in the building and maintenance side of the organisation, relieving Ken of the
daily maintenance of buildings and vehicles, as well as construction projects.
Gloria supports Peter and the rest of the personnel wherever required. Oh, and she does
fantastic cooking and we hear she's hard to beat at scrabble!!

David and Julie Elliott
David was involved in an administrative and maintenance support role around the hospital complex,
as well as teaching ESL and running the on-site recreation centre
titled "Le Forum",
aimed at providing a 'preventative health' or healthy lifestyle choice for civil servants and other educated
nationals seeking an alternative to the pub-scene.
Julie was also involved in the running of "Le Forum", as well as attempting to learn some
French (and a bit of Fulani) and supporting David and the others as required.

impressions of Djibo.
