Notes: Eli was born in the village of Willingham, where generations of his family had lived since 1534. He was brought up to follow his father and uncles in their boot and shoemaking business in British Terrace in Willingham. On the 28 September 1895, at the age of 24, he enlisted in the Royal Navy for a term of 12 years, re-enlisting on the 28 September 1907 "To complete time for pension".

Although her birth certificate gives her Christian names as Mary Amelia, no one seems to know when or why she became Mary Agnes Margaret, however, that is the name on her marriage certificate and the one by which her family always knew her.
