The Significance of the Astrological Moon.
First Published at Suite101.com

Continuing on from my introductory article about the Sun, Moon and Rising Sign and The Significance of the Astrological Sun, in this article we'll have a closer look at the meaning of the Moon within a birth chart.

Unless you have a serious interest in astrology you probably don't know what your Moon sign is. As mentioned in my introductory article, the Sun Sign is what most people are aware of because it is easy to calculate. However, because the Moon moves through each zodiac sign at a rate of about 2 1/2 days per sign it is more difficult to calculate it's position accurately. This is one of the reasons having a birth chart drawn up should be left to a professional.

If you were to watch the sky, the Sun looks pretty much the same all the time whereas the Moon can be seen moving through it's different phases - New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, Third Quarter and then back to the New Moon again. This is one of the reasons that the Moon symbolises change and fluctuation within a birth chart.

Taking these themes a step further, fluctuation and change can also be seen as part of being a woman. For example, when a woman is carrying a child her body fluctuates and changes. Men's bodies on the other hand don't usually go through such a dramatic metamorphosis. This is one of the reasons the Moon is associated with women and feminine themes.

Other themes symbolised by the Moon include nurturing, home, family, diet, moods, emotion, feeling, women, the past, pregnancy, childbirth, habits, and behaviour patterns that are shaped early in life. The Moon is what is set down in the past. While the Sun likes to shine alone, the Moon helps us to merge and to join. It also symbolises 'mother' - anyone who provides for the individual emotionally will fill the role of 'mother' regardless of his or her sex.

As mentioned in my article The Significance of the Astrological Sun, the Sun is a conscious, masculine and outgoing energy that is easy to spot, while the Moon is an unconscious, internal, feminine and an illogical energy. I look at the Sun as being what we want, while the Moon symbolism is what we need.

So if we look at the sign, placement and relationship to the other planets the Moon has then we can get a good feel for what the individual needs to survive. This is different to the Sun in that it represents what we want in order to feel special and recognised as an individual.
