What Are The Houses And What Do They Mean?
First Published at Suite101.com

The Twelve Houses

Many of you that have an interest in astrology have heard the term 'house' at some stage. If you have been wondering what this means then read on! The explanation of this term is quite actually quite simple.

If you look at the empty birth chart above you will note that it is divided into twelve sections - these are what astrological houses are.

The outside circle represents the pathway of the Sun (the ecliptic), the divisions represent a way of dividing the birth map into sections for interpretative purposes. You will see these marked on the inner circle from 1 - 12 running counter-clockwise.

There are many ways to actually divide the sky into these twelve sections depending on the birth data available, preference of the astrologer and type of information required from the birth chart. Regardless, the chart is usually divided into the twelve sections as shown in the example.

So, What Do They Mean?

The various sections of the chart have a number of meanings, depending on the type of astrology being used, ie, psychological, medical, mundane.

I will have a look at the general meanings of these divisions this time and perhaps go into the other interpretations in more detail through more detailed articles at another time.

First House: How others see you. Character type. Outlook on life. Appearance. Early childhood.

Second House: Possessions. Earning capacity. What you value. Money and worldly goods. Self-esteem.

Third House: Environment. Communication. Siblings, peers, neighbours. Intellectual interests. Early education.

Fourth House: Home and parents. Heritage and heredity. Psychological roots. The mother. Early subconscious conditioning.

Fifth House: Children. Love affairs and romance. Fun and enjoyment. Personal self-expression. Hobbies and talents.

Sixth House: Service and duties. Employment and employees. Servants and dependents. Pets and small animals. Diet, health problems.

Seventh House: Partnerships (marriage and business). Open adversaries. Legal contracts. Co-operation (or it's lack!). Court trials.

Eighth House: Other people's possessions. Partner's resources. Inheritance, insurance, taxation. Sexual matters. Death and legacies.

Ninth House: Long journeys. Goals and planning. Higher education, philosophy and religion. Advertising and publicity. Liking for large animals, particularly horses.

Tenth House: Career. Public standing and life ambitions. What the world remembers a person for. Positions of authority or fame. The father.

Twelfth House: Behind the scenes activities. Sacrificial service. Deception or secrets. Hidden enemies. Places of confinement, e.g., prisons, hospitals, health retreats, etc.

There are other interpretations that can be used when looking at the meaning of the twelve houses but in this article I have covered the basics otherwise I would have an article that goes on, and on, and on!
