One Night in Hervey Bay

'One Night in Hervey Bay....'

One night in Hervey bay we went to the jetty

It was just on dusk and the tide was out

The sand and the water made interesting patterns

As the sun set the sky and the water turned to pink

The reflections on the water and the clouds in the sky got more & more beautiful

I stayed and watched and photographed until it was dark

Artist Statement

Taking the theme of watermarks I thought firstly of watermarks in paper, then of the marks made by water. I decided to combine the two and pulled out my photo collection. I've had the photos from Hervey Bay for several years and have always intended making a book with them. The Milne Bay photos were taken earlier this year, the water was always there and so beautifully clear but quite difficult to photograph because of the intense shadows of the tropics.

I've used the same watermarks in all three books and since in most cases watermarks require close inspection and illumination I've included a light source in 'Fire on the Water'.

'Bay to Bay' was made in a dos-a-dos binding so that comparisons and contrasts could be made between the two bays, both bays are gateways to islands but there the similarity ends. Hervey Bay is old, Milne Bay is young, Hervey Bay was more beautiful in the evening, Milne Bay in the morning.

The beauty of 'One Night in Hervey Bay…' lies in both the beauty of the sunset and in the paper, which was made from kozo and mulberry bast paper. Keeping the binding simple I used two of the sticks that I'd peeled the bark off for the paper with some NZ flax string dipped in the kozo & mulberry pulp.
