Make up Plaster of Paris according to directions, making sure to add the plaster to the water not vice versa. Pour into plastic cups and allow to set. When the plaster has set carve your desired pattern into the plaster remembering to reverse any numbers or letters. Keep your designs fairly simple. Some good sources for designs are clip art and childrens colouring books. Once you are happy with your design wash the excess plaster off and lightly coat the mould with vaseline.

Prepare some cotton linter pulp by soaking in warm water and beating. I generally use a blender. One blender full is enough for about 20 small casts. Make up some cornflour by mixing approximately 2 tablespoons full with cold water then quickly pouring on about 1 litre of boiling water. Strain this into your pulp. Strain your pulp through a sieve and press a small amount of the cotton linter into your mould. Use a sponge to remove as much water as possible then wait for it to dry. You can speed up the drying by putting your mould in an oven set at about boiling point. Check out more detailed instructions for casting here, and for making latex casts, here |
