The Australian Labour Market 1983-1988

 ABSTRACT

The number of jobs created in the period 1983-1988 is discussed. The number and type of exceptions to that job creation are discussed. A detailed analysis of the number and type of jobs in various industries is discussed. Graphs are presented showing the long term trends in the various industrial divisions of the economy. An analysis is made of the consequences of the changes in the type of jobs being created, and the impact of those changes on the economy.

Out of the total of 8.8 million employed people (1988) at any one time almost 1.5 million people may not be working owing to the fact that there was no work for them to do. The conclusion is that poverty can exist even though there is full employment, if the type and quality of those jobs is not conducive to the creation of wealth or the earning of an income.
