Reunion history

Back in the mid 1990s, the idea of having a Tarranyurk State School reunion was suggested, and in 1996 a small group of us went to the Public Records Office, then in Laverton (Melbourne), to have a look at what information existed pertaining to the school.

The most significant information obtained was a list of all the students and teachers who had attended the school. We had a meeting a short time after and it was decided that the next step would be to find the addresses of as many of these people as possible, and draft a letter to be sent to them.

Unfortunately, we got busy with other things over the following years, and the reunion was put on hold.

In 2002, while still not wanting to rekindle the reunion idea full on, I decided to chase up some history on the school.  Some publications were available with good histories of Tarranyurk, and other schools (“Vision and Realisation - A Centenary History of State Education in Victoria” [1973], “Our Jeparit - Back to Jeparit” [1980] & “From Wilderness to Wheatlands - An early history of the Antwerp district” [1985]).  I also contacted the ‘Education History Unit’ of the Department of Education & Training, and they sent me what information they had, however it was essentially what was already in those publications (they probably sourced their information from here) .
My research at the time did lead me to finding the current location of the school building, so it was a real joy to visit it at the end of December 2002.

In 2003, I decided to put a Tarranyurk section on my Web site, with the intention of showing any pictures I could find of Tarranyurk, and having it available to use if we did eventually go ahead with a reunion.

Around mid 2000s, or so, some previous Tarranyurk residents had been considering the possibility of having a plaque erected at the site of the old school.  These people were unaware of the other reunion group.

From around 2005, Leanne Christian (then a resident of Tarranyurk) had been compiling a history of Tarranyurk with plans to produce a book.

In June 2006, a meeting was held to bring all these elements together. It was decided that a “Back to Tarranyurk” should be organised, with a Tarranyurk State School reunion component. This was planned to be held on a Saturday in March, 2007.   
A “Back to Tarranyurk” committee was established, essentially consisting of those attending the meeting, with Greg King appointed as Chairperson, and Leanne Christian appointed as Secretary/Treasurer.

On 24th. March, 2007, the Back-to Tarranyurk was held.
