Our history story starts here with Oliver LIDGER/AGGETT. Not the first or earliest known Aggett of course, but the first and earliest that we can link to common descendants. We have arranged the 'tree' in the form of generations, that is all the principal characters in 'Generation 3' are the issue of the principal characters in 'Generation 2", all the principal characters in 'Generation 4' are the issue of the principal characters in 'Generation 3', and so on.

GENERATION 1

Oliver LIDGER/AGGETT

 Oliver LIDGER/AGGETT married Jane nee CLARK/BRIMBLECOMBE (aged 24) on 24Jun1709 at Throwleigh and they had Jane was baptised 13Jan1684, the daughter of John Brimblecomb (Mar1657 at Throwleigh) and Anne nee BOND (1678 – 1717), and christened on 13th Jan at Throwleigh, Devon. Her siblings were Thomas (1680), Grace (1681), Anne (1690), and John (1693 – 1695). She died in April 1752 in Throwleigh, age 67, and was buried 19Apr that year.
Oliver died Sep1777 in Gidleigh, Devon

Richard AGGETT (son of Thomas AGGETT and Ann nee FROST)

Richard AGGETT (b 18Dec1748) married Mary GERMAN (?JARMAN) on 2Apr1771 at Throwleigh and they had Witnesses to their marriage were Jacob GERMAN & Jeffrey ENDACOTT
Richard died 14Dec1820. Mary died July 1808.

Mary died in Nov1793 (most likely in childbirth) and was buried 1Dec1793 at Throwleigh.
John remarried on 25Mar1794 at Throwleigh to Mary TEDDY (born 1765), and they had (Witnesses to John and Mary TEDDY'S marriage were George GIDLEY & James TIDDY).
Mary (nee TEDDY) died Oct 1829 aged 65 years.


GENERATION 4

Catherine AGGETT (daughter of Edward AGGETT and Catherine nee REYNOLDS)

Catherine AGGETT (c1773) married on 10 Apr 1796 at Throwleigh, Devon, England to William WEBBER. Witnesses to their marriage were Henry AGGETT & Philip WALTER.


William AGGETT (son of Edward AGGETT and Catherine nee REYNOLDS)

William AGGETT (c 1775) married Ann (born c 1777 at Chagford) and they had The family lived in Mary St. Newton Abbot. Ann was widowed by 1881. Ann also had a grandaughter, Susan – b 1836 at Bovey Tracey – pottery worker.


Henry AGGETT (son of Thomas AGGETT and Ann nee ENDACOTT)

Henry AGGETT (b c 1763 in Hitisley, Devon) married Joanna BRIMBLECOMBE (bap. 8Feb1764 in Throwleigh) on 13Jul1788 at Sth Tawton and they had Marriage witnessed by John BRIMBLECOMBE and Joseph (?Jeffrey) ENDACOTT.
Joanna was born the daughter of William BRIMBLECOMBE (b 1732) and Mary nee AVERY (b 1737)
Joanna's grandfather Christopher BRIMBLECOMBE (b 1706) was a brother to James BRIMBLECOMBE (B 1704) who married Rebecca PILLAR (b 1707) who had James BRIMBLECOMBE Jnr (b1731). James Jnr married Joan Preston (b 1734) and they had the children

William AGGETT (son of William AGGETT and Ann)

William AGGETT (b 1804) married Elizabeth (born c 1813 at Hennock) and they had William Snr was an agricultural laborer, then he was a grocer/shopkeeper and farmer of 16 acres. The family lived in Mary Street, Bovey Tracey, and then at Fore St. Newton.
Sarah worked as a general servant for Mary A Crocker at a home for 'death from birth daughters'.


William AGGETT (son of Henry AGGETT and Joanna nee BRIMBLECOMBE)

William AGGETT (b 29Apr1792) married Susanna WEEKS (born 3Mar1799 at Chagford) on 18Jun1820 at Chagford and they had William was a master mason, employing 2 men. The family lived in Mill St. Chagford.
Witnesses to their marriage were James ROW and William MUTCH.
William died 25Dec1856 aged 64 years

Edward AGGETT (b 31May1807) married Catherine MORRISH (born c 1813 at Chagford) on 28Mar1845 at Chagford, and they had Edward was a farmer of 150 acres, he employed 3 men as laborers. The family lived at South Hill, Okehampton. They were recorded in the 1881 cenwsus as living at Woodland Farm, Woodland.


Elizabeth AGGETT (daughter of William AGGETT and Mary nee BARNES)

Elizabeth AGGETT (b 1809) married John Nosworthy TARR on 1Jan1833, and they had, John TARR was born in 1807 at Manaton. He was a miller, the family lived at Town Mills, Devonshire.


Maria AGGETT (daughter of William AGGETT and Mary nee BARNES)

Maria AGGETT (b 28Jun1812) married Joseph HARVEY (born c 1814 at Manaton) on 24Jul1841 at Chagford and they had Joseph was a shopkeeper, the son of Andrew and Mary HARVEY (nee TARR). The family lived at Hr Town.

George AGGETT (b 1813) married Elizabeth (b 1815 at Nth Tawton), and they had George's occupation was that of a thatcher and basket maker, then as a Master baker and grocer The family lived in Forder St. Newton Abbot. Later having a baker's shop in Court Street.
Mary Ann was a dressmaker.


William Ledger AGGETT (son of George AGGETT and Ann nee SMITH)

William AGGETT (b 1824) married Maria HAYWARD (born 1824 at Moreton) in 10Oct1846 at the Parish Church of Moretonhamstead, Devon, and they had William was a boot and shoe maker, he died in London in 1872. Maria was a dressmaker. They lived at George St. Newton Abbot.


James AGGETT (son of Jacob AGGETT and Elizabeth nee TUCKER)

James AGGETT (1832) married Mary TUCKER (b1832 at Durnsford), and they had

Daniel died 1915, and was buried 5May .


Edward AGGETT (son of John AGGETT and Elizabeth nee ENDACOTT)

Edward AGGETT (b 1792) married Jane (born 1796) and they had Edward was an agricultural laborer at Greenwell Bovey in 1818, at Woodnaton in 1820 and at Thornworthy in 1822. The family lived at Thornworthy, Okehampton.
Edward died 4Mar1860


John AGGETT (son of John AGGETT and Elizabeth nee ENDACOTT)

John AGGETT (b 24Feb1802) married twice, firstly to Mary GALE (b 1779 – d 1828) on 23Jan1827 at Bovey Tracey and they had and secondly to Frances Ann SOUTHERTON (bap. 27Jun1796 at Petworth Sussex) on 12Aug1833 at Chagford and they had John was a master thatcher employing Joseph MELLHUISH (who boarded with them). The family lived in Lower St Chagford.
John and Frances migrated to Australia aboard the ship Oithina, leaving Plymouth on 21Oct1854, and arriving in Portland on 30Jan1855. Frances spent some time in Peru living with her daughter Lucy Emma, shipping records indicate that she travelled there and back on at least 2 occasions. The first record shows that she arrived in the port of Fremantle in Jul1858 aboard the ship Mousse De Nantes. A second record shows a Frances Aggett arriving in Fremantle in Sep1860 aboard the ship Sultan. Both records indicate that she was 60 years of age at the time, so there has been an age confusion somewhere.
Frances died age 83 in 1879 in Sydney.


Henry AGGETT (son of John AGGETT and Elizabeth nee ENDACOTT)

Henry AGGETT (bap. 1809) married Mary Ann WOOLEY (born 1810 at Exeter) on 28Nov1832 at Chagford, and they had Henry's occupation was that of a drayman. The family lived in Channings Court, St Thomas


William AGGETT (son of Edward AGGETT and Jane nee BROCK)

William AGGETT (b 12Jan1812) married Elizabeth (born c 1814 at Newton Abbot) and they had William was an agricultural laborer. The family lived at Rushford Mills, Okehampton.. Eliza was a nurse, she was noted as a pauper in the 1881 census, and it included a grandson George (born 1869 in Chagford). Their address here is given as Sidcombe St, Chagford.


John AGGETT (son of Edward AGGETT and Jane nee BROCK)

John AGGETT (b 7Nov1813) married Mary Ann BOND (born c 1816 at Throwley) on 28Nov1839 and they had John was an agricultural laborer. The family lived in Lower St. Chagford. George born 1871 at Chagford is listed as John's grandson.


James AGGETT (son of Edward AGGETT and Jane nee BROCK)

James AGGETT (b 1816) married Elizabeth (b 1815 at Marldon) on 26Feb1837 at Chagford, and they had The family lived at Tor Court, Newton. James was a laborer. George was a Quarter Master at 'Cambridge', Devon.


James AGGETT (son of James AGGETT and Grace nee PLARE)

James AGGETT (b 1825) married Ann (b 1828 at Gidleigh), and they had James was a thatcher. The family lived at 48 'Village', Drewsteignton.


William AGGETT (son of James AGGETT and Grace nee PLARE)

William AGGETT (b 1832) married Ann (born 1837 at Sth Tawton), and they had William was an agricultural laborer. The family lived at Langdown, Sth Tawton.


William Aggett (son of John Aggett and Elizabeth nee FAWDON)

William Aggett was born in 1829 at Devonshire England, he married at the age of 23 years on 31st July 1852 at St Peter Port, Guernsey by licence to AgnettaVigar (born 29Oct1830) aged 22 years, and they had and an adopted daughter William (originally from Devon), worked as a quarryman in England, an agricultural laborer and later on as a contractor. He and Agnetta migrated to Australia at the age of 23, from Guernsey in the Channel Islands, arriving at Adelaide on 26Aug1853 aboard the MAGDALENA, and they settled at Ararat, Victoria.
The 'Magdalena' was an 870 ton, 3 mast ship, captained by Cp. Brenton. It departed from Southhampton on 23May1853, taking 3 months to complete the voyage.
Ararat rate records indicate that he occupied firstly a hut (in 1869) and the following year a house. He was intered in the Ararat lunatic asylum on 5Apr1883 and died at the age of 54 in July of that year at the Ararat lunatic asylum (cause of death was given as 'disease of the brain'), he was buried in the Ararat Cemetery on 3/Jul/1883 (grave no. 1189).
Agnetta was a small petite lady, and could speak French fluently. She was born on 29Oct1830 at St Peter Port, Guernsey, the daughter of George Vigars and Rosanna McCann. She was baptised in private on 12Nov1830. Originally the Vigars came from Somerset but some spilled over into Devon. She had at least one other sister, Edith, who married Mr Reid.
Agnetta and Wiliam went many years childless until falling pregnant with Tom. In the meantime they adopted a daughter, Kate.
Agnetta died at the age of 86 in July 1917 at Ararat from senile decay, and was buried in the Ararat Cemetery on 3/Jul/1917 (grave no. 1189).
Kate was born to Miss Catherine Young, an unmarried mother, (father unknown)


Thomas Aggett (son of John Aggett and Elizabeth nee FAWDON)

Thomas AGGETT (1829) married Elizabeth HILL, and they had, Thomas was a potter, the family lived in Fore St. Bovey Tracey.
Eliza was born in 1829, the daughter of Mary HILL (born 1789 at Islington)


GENERATION 6

William AGGETT (son of William AGGETT and Elizabeth)

William AGGETT (b 1850) married Eliza (born 1852 at Bovey Tracey), and they had William was a joiner and undertaker. The family lived at Fore St. Bovey Tracey.


John AGGETT (son of William AGGETT and Susanna nee WEEKES)

John AGGETT (b 1821) married Harriett WESTAWAY (born 1825 at Drewsteignton) on 9Dec1847 at Chagford and they had John Snr was a master stone mason. The family lived in Mill St. Chagford.
Harriet was born At Drewsteignton, the daughter of John (b 1792 at Sth Tawton) and Ann (b 1794 at Drewsteignton) Westaway. Harriett had the siblings, James – b 1835 at Drewsteignton (farm lab) and Elizabeth – b 1839 at Drewsteignton
John Snr died 13Feb1900 aged 79 years. He was blind in his later years

William AGGETT (b 17Mar1833) married Maria PUDDLECOMBE (b 1836 at Bridford) on 6Jul1855 at Bridford, and they had William was a general mason. The family lived at Poole Beer Cottage, Bridford.
Maria was born in 1836 at Bridford, the daughter of John PUDDLECOMBE.

Southerton John AGGETT (son of John AGGETT and Frances Ann nee SOUTHERTON)

Southerton AGGETT (b 24Dec1837) married Agnes WHITE in 1859 at Sydney, Aust., and they had Agnes was born in 1838 at Warrickshire, England.
Southerton and Agnes returned to England after the birth of Southerton John Jnr. And this is where Elizabeth was born. They returned to Australia, arriving on 29 Nov1862 (on the ‘Eastern Empire’) departing from Plymouth, and the rest of the children were born in Australia. Southerton entered the colony as a ‘servant’, but joined the police force in 1870 at the age of 25. He is credited with being the first trooper in Cessnock and was presented with a silver watch by the people of Cessnock when he left there to take up a position in Gosford, the watch is still in the family possession. He retired from the force as Senior Constable in 1899 after 25 years service. Southerton also served at Wallabadah and Murrurundi, and took an active part in the pursuit of Thunderbolt the bushranger and other notorious outlaws. He was also instrumental in bringing to justice many cattle and sheep rustlers.
Southerton John Snr. died 12Aug1905 in Gosford at the age of 67 years.
Agnes died 17Jul1910 at Gosford.
The graves of Southerton, Joseph and Christopher are in the Bradys Gully Cemetery, Gosford. These have been ‘re-discovered’ and landscaped by the local council and Rotary.

William Viger enlisted in the forces as a Private in the Victorian Expeditionary Forces & he died of meningitis at the age of 19 after several weeks of hospitalisation. He had been enlisted only 3 months, & was about 8 weeks in camp at Seymour, he came home on the 4th Oct. but when he arrived he was ill & taken to hospital. Placed in a fever ward & isolated it was not until a fortnight afterwards that the case was diagnosed as meningitis. He died 11 Dec 1915 and is buried at the Ararat Cemetery, Grave No CE 2510.
