Have you ever thought that you might die a sudden death? Hundreds of people in our world die in accidents every day. Every single one of them would probably never have thought that the events of the next few seconds would terminate his/her life.
On January 9, 1991, something quiet unusual happened in an Australian hospital. The patient Ken Mullens who made a good recovery from a heart attack had his lunch in bed, when he suddenly felt strange and called the nurse. Within the next few moments he died of cardiac arrest. The nurse called the doctors who arrived immediately, and tried to stimulate the patient's heart with electric shock treatment for 10 Minutes. Ken did not recover and was declared dead. The morgue attendant was called and the medical staff removed the sensors from the patient and started packing up. Then Ken suddenly coughed, started to breath again and made a full recovery. Records show that he was dead for 20 minutes. Doctors were lost for an explanation for this phenomena and soon Ken Mullens was asked by the Australian press and TV, to explain what he had experienced during these 20 minutes. Dying - What does that mean exactly? What happens when we die? Where do we go? Is there something like an after-ceath communication? -Who could answer these questions better than somebody who has had the experience of dying? What leads to death in medical terms? -Heartbeat, blood flow and breathing come to a stand still. Interaction between brain and body fades, then loss of consciousness and dying of the brain as a result of insufficient blood flow and oxygen supply. The time between a cardiac arrest and death of the brain is what we call dying. There are only very few people who have made recovery from a clinical death. People like Ken Mullens, who have experienced these crucial minutes in full consciousness know the answer to all our questions about death. That is what makes them special. The experience of dying (or the Near Death Experience -NDE-) changed Ken Mullen's personality dramatically. The rough, hard working, adventure loving Australian bloke, turned into a gentle, spiritual and helpful man with a mission. His mission is to let people know what he had experienced and to help and console people who have lost their loved ones. As part of his mission he wrote two interesting books about the event, that split his life in two. The life before and after his NDE.
