The Last Post A.N.Z.A.C: Australian New Zealand Army Corps. Anzac Day in Australia is held on the 25th of April to commemorate Australians who fell in all wars and to honour the return servicemen and women. John Simpson Kirkpatrick 6th July 1982 was born and died 19th May 1918 when he was hit by a machine gun bullet in his back. Better known simply as Simpson, in the 24 days he was at Gallipoli he rescued over 300 diggers who had been injured by enemy fire. His heroic feat was accomplished under constant and ferocious attack from the enemy. Above is a medallion in his honour for the lives he saved. The story of Simpson and his donkey have been told to generations of school children. His actions are regarded as the highest expression of mateship, and he remains one of Australia's best known historical figures. The nickname 'Digger' is attributed to the number of ex-gold diggers in the early army units and to the trench digging activities of the Australian soldiers during World War I. The actual origin of the name has been lost in time but the Australian soldier is known affectionately around the world as the Digger.
