The ships log:
Lake Macquarie August 2004.
This was a pre Fraser Island paddle
to test the gear. The paddle on day one was planned for 30 km but ran into 36
by the end of day one. We had intended to camp at a caravan park on the upper
Lake, but on our unannounced arrival the owner was not particularly pleased.
So we paddled back across the bay to a great little spot we had sighted on route.
A pleasant evening listing to what appeared to be a fish jumping in the same
spot on a regular basis. This continued throughout the night and into the morning,
rather odd for a fish to be in the same place for so long. On packing up in
the morning, we paddled over to the area and spotted some movement in around
2 - 3 meters of water. To our surprise it was a very large Octopus! Better still
I had caught it on camera.
The weekend finished as it had started with great weather. The total distance
was 57 km with a full load. Learned a lot about packing for longer distance
and what it feels like to paddle a 200 kg Kayak!
