Mangrove Creek

After our portage over the weir, we arrived at the Billabong. This area had not changed much in 15 years other than a heavier growth of water plants and grasses encroaching on this prime habitat for many bird species.

Determined to get to the rain forest and waterfall it was hard to locate the main flow into the area.

A great place of beauty with many small rainforest dwelling birds.

Not a great deal of water flowing.

Time to get out and walk Paul. I was looking for an old grave stone that I had found up this valley 15 years ago. I remembered it was dated back in the late 1800's and the name on the stone was Mary? or such.

Well this had to be the place where it layed. It was gone! and by the look of the dead grass only just taken recently. I remember this stone being very heavy when I stood it upright so long ago. So how was it removed? We searched around and found some pink ribbons tied to the trees, these we followed back to a bush track. So who's got it? more to the point who would want to remove a headstone?

We continued on up the river.

A tricky portage across the tree. The water was deep and meant getting out of the Kayak onto the tree.. lift it over and get back in the other side.
