The ships log:
MurraMurra National Park June 2004.
A paddle organised by one of our
fellow paddlers to MurraMurra National Park. With 11 starters meeting at Berowra
Waters we were on the water by 09:30 heading North to MurraMurra. The timing
of the tide is paramount as to whether you get to the camp site.
On route we paddled into one of the most unusual mangrove bays you would ever
see, with tall stances of Mangroves that had missed the culling of days-gone-by
probably due to the inaccessibility of this area.
Moving on with the flow of the tide
we set up camp just before sunset. After a hearty meal and some hot marshmellows
it was off to bed for a cold night...
The early morning start was required so we would not miss the tide. Very picturesque
with the mist on the waters fading into the tops of the valley. A welcomed burst
of warmth greeted us half way down the creek.
Arriving back at Berowra we struck a canoe/kayak/Boating traffic jam with around
40 double canoes just arriving back from their camp. Fortunately is was in the
other direction to where we paddled.
Notes: As of Feb 2005, a low of 0.39 m tide will enable you to walk your Kayak across the sand bars in the upper reaches of the river. A normal low of around 0.5 m should be ok to paddle although it still may be easier to walk out the Kayak. Keep in mind the shifting sands will change over time.
