Biography

 

Bev Braune (Sydney, 2006)The poet Bev Braune has published numerous poems, drawings and essays in the areas of poetics, aesthetics and Old Norse-Old Icelandic poetry in Australia, Jamaica, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, China, Denmark, England and Northern Ireland. Born in Jamaica in 1954, she studied at the University of the West Indies at Mona, completing a Bachelor of Arts in Languages, Literature and Philosophy in 1977 and an Master of Philosophy in English on Eugene O’Neill in 1980. In 1982 she brought out Dream Diary, with Savacou, which explored idea and form. Bev moved to Australia in 1983 through an interest in Australian literature and became an Australian citizen in 1989. In 1998 she published Camouflage, with Bloodaxe Books, about the search for beauty in the modern world. She also produced two chapbooks Dream Diary - Selected and New 1996 and If the last czarina could speak 2004 on chronology and conversation. In 1999 she completed a doctorate at the University of Wollongong with her thesis Skulváði Úlfr: Historical Lacunae and Poetic Space. She was a regular reviewer for the Australian Book Review, the Australian Women's Book Review and Imago. She co-edited an issue of Arts Review (UWI) and was the guest poetry editor for an issue of Literature in North Queensland (JCU). An invitee to the Sixth Annual Conference of the European Association for Commonwealth Languages and Literatures in Bayreuth, she was also a guest of the Queensland Poetry Festival, the Melbourne Festival of Poetry and the Brisbane Writers Festival. Bev lives with her husband, Thoran, in Sydney where she continues her work in poetry.
