6/07/05OK i have been slack on the web front lately, work and other commitments keeping me from having a go! I have been working this last two weeks on my '74 400. Trying to get it ready to ride at Lake Glenbawn. Haven't ridden it in over 6 months or more i suppose, so lots i had to look at. First was the forks, i had been using a set from a '75 and finally had time to put the right '74 ones on,  so did that. Front wheel needed looking at as i had previously found out that someone had made there own bearing spacer. I replaced this with a spare original i had and set it up with all the correct spacers etc. Also put on different set of shocks that were bought from ebay, don't know how good they will be but i will have to wait and see. Then there was the ignition! Well the last time i rode it i got the shits with the motoplat and decided to try an internal rotor PVL on the beast, whooaa!! A 400 light switch, pretty much too out of control for motocross, dirt track maybe? So i decided to go back to the old motoplat setup and low and behold same troubles, so out came the old box top coils and stators. Changed a few top coils and no difference, tried a bottom stator that my dad bought from motohead in the states on eBay, set the timing and away she went!! Also during this time i pulled the carby off and pulled it down and cleaned to make sure it wasn't the culprit as well!! Hopefully by tonight i will have it all back together and ready to ride, Bill Campbell is coming up from Canberra and will help me out with a few other jobs i have to do to the '81 250 that i haven't got round too yet. We will head off early in the morning picking up a yamaha freak, Victor Drew, on the way! Bradley Lewis will be coming down from Inverell to meet us and have a good time ridiing and talking KTM's!!!!

Good luck to the KTM riders at Buladelah this long weekend!!!!

Rockley April 05

Here are some pics from the last round of racing at Rockley. We had an excellent weekend of camping, food, beer and some awesome practice sessions. Racing was excellent also with the track a little dusty but still holding up to the previous days practice session.

We had a good turnout of KTM's again! With Dennis and Bill bringing three each, myself just the one and Dave Harrison from Hay bringing two. Both Bill and Dennis had problems with their 400's, Bill had blown a base gasket, and Dennis a head gasket. Dennis' 495 went strong in the practice session but he retired it too as it's base gasket was seen to be leaking! The boys from Canberra have some work to do before their next round which be held in Canberra at Fairburn Park MX. i will be spending some time looking at front brakes trying to get a setup that works!

Hey guys, sorry for not updating the site as of late, but i have been on holidays on the island of Bali, also went on a surf charter to Lombok, Sumbawa and scored some good waves. But this is not the reason why you have come the site!!

Denny has updated the 495 pistons to suit both the reed and piston port engines. These are available from him at US$196.00 delivered to Australia. See pictures below.

6/12/04 - Pictures of the Wiseco 495 Pistons from Denny, seven4racing.com . Click on the Photos link to the left or click here.

29/11/04 - Had a ride with fellow OzKTM guys Dennis Myers and Bill Campbell on Sunday. The rest of the Canberra Team FastBits were out in force as well which made for some good racing and good day considering the temperature was over 30degC.

Urethane Parts Brochure - now available in the PARTS SECTION!!

A big thank you goes out to Rob Wager and Brad Lewis who have been working hard behind the scenes to keep our bikes on the race track and trails.

KTM 420 & 495 Pistons have been re-manufactured. Check the News page out for more details.

12 Nov 04 - Technical Section has been updated again - added some new stuff, enjoy.

Received this email plus photos from Alan Hoon last week :

G'day,

I was checking out the ozvmx site and followed the link to your site.
here is a few photo's of a MX sidecar I raced for a year in Victorian MX circles back in 1987. the bike was owned by Bernard Mueller & Robert Duke (1984 Australian MX Sidecar Champs) and I had the pleasure of doing a season on it when Bernard went to Europe for the World MX Sidecar rounds without his passenger (due to work/family) and was lucky to have Rob Duke on the chair with me.
Anyway motor is 1986 KTM 540 in a EML chassis, it was due for a rebuild in 1987 but still had heaps of grunt as I remember it. we even had a bit of success on it and did a meeting in Sth Oz (Hec Henderson at ACUSA park). I would have loved to ridden that 540 solo in a desert race back then. Recently Acquired my first KTM, a 300 EXC 2005 model just run it in, and love it.
Regards
Hoony

KTM 420 & 495 Pistons Remanufactured, Denny over in the states has informed me that he has had wiseco remanufacture the pistons for both the piston port and the reed valve 495 motors. For details contact Denny or go to his website www.seven4racing.com . He also has pistons for Ossa 250's.

Barleigh Ranch, Hunter Valley Motorcycle Club Event. Hunter Valley Club held a meeting especially for us and our older bikes last weekend(6/7th Nov). Thanks to the club first for showing some support for our older machinery. What happened to the turn out? Thankfully a good group of blokes turned up to support them and put on a good show...not for points, not for trophy's, but for good clean(dirty) fun! Even better though was the practice day on Saturday, where if you wished to socially ride, you could, i had four 20min practice sessions on the Saturday, Fernando Franco couldn't get enough asking if he could cut some more laps at 5pm after re-fitting the kero(Hungarian Firewater) lamp to the front of the Husky for the night session!! Sunday consisted of 3 rounds era class racing then there was Novice Open and Expert Open, take your pick, you could have had a least six races, or done a Fernando and raced everything except the 125's!! Steve Schmidt broke his collar bone on the Saturday, come back to camp at the track that night and stayed all day Sunday, now that's dedication. The good part about the weekend was the social side of things, such as camping out, helping blokes out, lending bikes, chatting. There wasn't any pressure to get out there and earn some points, if you missed a race, so what there was another you could jump into, if you WANTED to. Some picture of the event may come soon.

Rob Wager has recently purchased this 250 for a quick rebuild and then his brother will be racing!

Lake Glenbawn Report - First of all i must thank Brad Lewis for bringing down his spare '81 250 for me to ride on the sunday!! A good weekend was had by all who attended, OzKTM attendees included Brad & Daryl Lewis, Dennis Meyers, Bill Campbell and myself. Bikes included a '73 250, '74 400, '76 250, '76 400,  '77 400, 2 x '81 250's.

We stayed at the Lake Glenbawn State Park, which has a beautiful outlook over the lake, just perfect for that afternoon beer while the sun sets, if you get there early enough! Dennis and Bill didn't get to see the sunset over the lake, blaming my directions and cursing me at every wrong turn, but they did make it in time for a good night Brand Bashing with the other guys!!

Race day - racing was split up with the older Pre78 and Pre75's racing the morning stint and the Evo and Pre85 hitting the track in the arvo. Brad had problems with the jetting on his '74 250 so that one got put back on the trailer early, My 400 ran well, but the rider couldn't keep up with Daryl who rode his Maico 440 well. Dennis had dramas with his 400, a bolt came loose which holds the engine cases together under the intake manifold, this let the gasket get blown out and then would suck air in to the bottom end. Bill's bikes ran sweetly all day, his MC5 250 sounded crisp as he gave some down the main straight. I had a run on Brad's stock '81 250 in the afternoon, took it easy in practice trying to see how different it would be to my 250. had more bottom end pull but that would not be a disadvantage on the track we were riding. Brad caught the gate on the first race leaving me to do my stuff at the front end of pack. Apparently there was a good duel going on the back of the pack between Honda rider Bruce McFarland and female racer Rachael Eagle, Rachael eventually getting the better of the tall Honda rider finishing ahead of him - fancy that - you wouldn't have read about it on a poster!! Would you Bruce!

Bill going for a cool down jog, after six races!!

Bill going for a warm down jog after 6 races!!

I got the hang of this 250 placing two seconds and third for the day, the bike steered well and brad has the suspension fully sorted!! Meanwhile Brad was shattering peoples confidences down the straights on his Hot Rocket 250.

We also met Ludden from Singleton who owns a '72 175 Penton that was imported here about 2/3 years ago. Another guy who has developed an interest in the KTM mark, even more so after seeing what they can do on the track!

We had a good day of racing, but more importantly a good weekend socialising with a group of good blokes, no matter what they ride!! Will add some pictures soon!! Adrian.

10/8/04 - Dennis has been at it again, this time spending the weekend dirt tracking his 495.

28/7/04 - Got a call from the Canberra Team FastBits boys to meet them down at Buckenbowra Moto Park for a social ride day. Dennis, Glen, Lex, Graeme and Gerard made the 2.5hr trip from home, it took me about the same time from the 'gong. The setup there is great for a camping weekend, with a kids 50cc track, 600m Dirt Track, MX, Euro Track, and Trail riding to keep you entertained. I took the '74 400 for a run which went well until i had ignition problems again, i think it has sheared the motoplat key. Gerard had problems starting his 465 Yammy as the actuator wouldn't engage, but that was over come with a bit push starting. Lex was having fun on his new purchase a husky 250. It seemed like Graeme just spent the day going round and round the dirt track, half the time on the back wheel! He got his $15 worth of track time. Then there is Glen who is now in need of new plastics for his evo DR400. He apparently stalled this heavy beast in front of Dennis, riding a KTM of course. Dennis then promptly ran him over! A good day was had even though the mx track was a bit rough for a vintage style of bike, i will return when i get my evo going for some more fun.

Dennis cleaning Glens plastics out of his Evo 250.

19/7/04 - My 400 is back/was back in action again. Rebuilt the top end and had her running. That was until the motoplat gremlin raised it's ugly head!! No spark, well it'd back to the box of motoplat bits and pieces and test different set-ups until one works!!

The 250 is taking longer than expected as i am waiting on the cases to return from the welder. Luckily our last round of racing was cancelled.

I have added some more pics to the '81 250 rebuild. Some of the cracks found in the cases and 5spd conversion.

'81 250 expires in a big way!! It has been raced hard since being built. Keep up to date with the rebuild here as well, i will update this page as i progress over the next few weeks!!

Crawford River Classic. If you missed this you should be there next year! This was an excellent two day event, thanks goes out to Bruce McFarland for running the event and all people who flagged and officiated during the day. Well, my poor old 400 didn't fair too well seizing while running second in a race on the grass track. Check out photos here!!

Visit to Brad Lewis' residence. Check out his new Gallery. Some pics of his nice '81 250 side panels and guards plus more!! Thanks goes to Brad and his Mum for a place to stay and good meal on my return trip from the Gold Coast.

Rob Wager's newly rebuilt 390, ready for QLD action! Click here for picture and more...

27 Apr 2004 - Canberra round was hugely successful. Dennis and the rest of the ACT bunch had done an excellent job in track preparation. It has to be one of the best MX events i have been to for VMX. Dennis and Bill rode well, showing their local knowledge of the track, I had a couple of wins on the 400 and third on the 250. Bill took it upon himself to stop the thumpers by physically throwing himself under the rear wheel of while while trying to pass!! He soon learned that the only thing that would stop these things is a derailed chain! He ended up with a few leg burns and a night in hospital due to infection. Anyone that missed this event should try and make an ACT Club day, as they hold a dedicated classic class. Photos can be found here...

23 Apr 2004 -Updated the site today. Next round of racing for HEAVEN-VMX is at Fairburn MX Complex Canberra. Can't wait for this round. Will be taking the '81 250 and '74 400. Local Gins Bill Campbell and Dennis Myers will be there to hold the KTM flag high! Special thanks goes to Dennis Myers who has put in a considerable amount of time and effort in preparation of the track to make it vintage friendly.

22 Feb 2004- First HEAVEN-VMX round at Rockley. Kamp KTM details here. This event was abandoned due to Dust conditions.

2 Jan 2004-New page added listing reproduction parts made here in Australia for our KTM's. Contact Me if you require anything that is listed.

30/31 Dec 2003- Brad Lewis decided it was time for a holiday and headed south to Canberra. I drove out to catch up with Brad, who was staying at Bill and Grace Campbell' s place. Thanks for having me stay as well guys! After the usual chit chat we headed out to Steve's farm for a bit of R&R (Riding and Roosting). We headed off for a bit of trail ride first off, Brad riding an '85 500, Bill on his '74 250, Myself riding one of Brad's 495's, Steve and his son were on there moderns. The 495 had leaking fork seals which dumped enough oil on the front brake to make going down hills and stopping a challenge. A few times Bill found me off the track! Brad swapped and i had a go on the 500. Having some brakes that worked made riding more enjoyable! Back at the cars we did a bit of bike swapping, drag racing across the paddocks so we could all get an idea on the evolution of the KTM's, We had from '74 thru to '85 to play around on. We all agreed that we will have to make an annual event and get some more guys to turn up. Next time we will venture north to Brad's end of the world. Click here to see some pics of the bikes and the day.

Contact Me if you require Rod Kits for your early KTM's in Australia. I 'll see what I can do.

Paul Harris will be riding his newly rebuilt '81 250 in the EVO class in the HEAVEN VMX Series for 2004. Click Here to view.

Added some Photos on the Technical page showing differences between the Piston Port and Reed Pistons. Click Here

Next Round of HEAVEN VMX series is at Buladelah on 19th October, 2003. This is a track well suited to the Pre 75 bikes, due to the lack of large jumps. Plenty of fun for all.

13/14 Sep 2003 - A few classic KTM owners gathered at Rockley, Near Bathurst, NSW for a round of the HEAVEN VMX On Any Sunday Series. Two rounds were run plus a Brands race round at the end of the day.

Dennis Meyers #555 came a off in practice and complained about sore ribs, only to find out on Monday that he has 4 broken ribs!! Brad Lewis also crashing his '81 495. Myself #101 had a crash first race of the day, only to be cleaned up by Bill Campbell #151 on his MC5 250!!

The weekend was a huge success, and was a good chance for us KTM owners to get together and compare bikes, notes and bullshit!

16 Sep 2003 - New website designed.
