WELCOME
Welcome to the Huntington Awareness Ride
Home Page; the place where you can see the planning for this
momentous ride and, once the ride has begun, you will be in almost
daily contact with the participants, myself (Tracey Hender) and
Damon McDonald. Huntington Disease is a little known and even
less talked about genetic disease which affects almost all aspects
of the sufferer's life including balance, speech, coordination
and multitasking. It affects both males and females equally and,
possession of the gene means that the person will generally develop
symptoms around the age of 30 to 50.
In 1993, my father was diagnosed with
Huntington Disease. In 98 I went through the predicitive testing
procedure and discovered that I also possessed the gene. My sister
received her results in September 99 - a hat trick. My cousin
in Wales received his results in December and was thankfully
clear. Throughout the testing, it became clear to me that very
few people had heard of the disease so, Damon and I decided that
we needed to do something to capture everyone's attention, create
awareness of the disease and the predictive testing as well as
meet others in the Huntington community - something which it
is very hard to do.
We hope you will take the time to browse
through the site and find out where we are going and when and
more details about the ride and about the disease. If you would
like to help with organisation, money, suggestions etc, please
do not hesitate to contact Tracey.
