STORAGE

When dry seed will need to be stored away from sun light and heat preferably in an airtight container. I use zip lock plastic bags. See Fig 4. It is always a good idea to keep accurate records regarding your seed. If kept correctly your tomato seed will be viable up to 5 years and beyond.

After removing seed from the fruit you will need to place seed into some type of container to ferment. A plastic disposable cup is ideal. You will need to add enough water to cover the seed.

Depending on the temperature the seed can take any thing from 4 days to 1 week to ferment.Once the liquid develops a white scum layer on the surface your seeds are ready to be dried. See Fig 1

Now the seed can be washed in clean water. You may wish to use some sort of strainer. I have made my strainer out of scrap pine and fly screen. See Fig 2e fig 2

STEP 3

When the seed is clean it can be placed on a paper plate or paper towel to dry. Once again I have made some drying racks . See fig 3. I place my seed on top of a refrigerator close to the back so the heat will help dry the seed. Do not leave your seed in the sun to dry. Again drying will depend on your weather conditions.
