even year          students           overview               parents                   odd years

The even year learning program has a historical perspective starting from Australia's first fleet and the white settlement of Australia to present day. It is theme based learning around tall ships and their role in the settlement and development of both Australia and South Australia.
The year is divided into 12 Set Works, 3 per term and the following is only set work associated with computing, the full program detail is available in the classroom.

SET WORK 9   DB feature but preparation starts in set work 8

CensusatSchool   Using the data phase after the questionnaire phase is complete, some set lessons on the use of Microsoft Excel may be necessary .

Your task is to use the data collected from the questionnaire phase in a variety of ways. You will have to create specific tables of data to generate graphs and then explain and/or draw conclusions from the graph. As a guide for ratings 1 simple graph is a red , 2 is black, 2 + a more complex one is blue and 2+2 is green.
See Mr R____ll's examples and poster in computer room.
You can save your sample data to your own server space  by right clicking  'save target as'. Please note the 'x' axis in excel is the vertical.
For Set Work 9 DB Feature present some of your best or most interesting results but organise graphs so you can colour in yourself .
ie put at least 2 graphs on an A4 page before printing and also tables/explanations, remember your name/room number on each page for printing.

Investigate how to get data by reading instructions below...

There are three ways you can get the data; designed to support you and the technological environment in your school…click on the link below and find the    heading  .... What Does the Data Look Like?  This sub heading will give you
  3 choices for accessing data.

OR

Prepared Samples You can also get data from the Data Samples section. These prepared samples have been taken from the Random Sampler and are saved in MS Excel format. Have a look so you get an idea of what can be done...

Access the Prepared Samples for 2006 data:  click here SAMPLES

The primary way to get the data is through the Random Sampler which provides random data samples of the CensusAtSchool questionnaire response data. Follow the instructions but do a simple sample first like 30 students in SA post code 5000 to 5999 and a particular gender and year level.

SET WORK 6  DB feature: Save the Clipper  - City of Adelaide

Mr R____ll would love to see this ship saved from demolition and returned to Adelaide as a historical show piece together with other ships significant to South Australia's maritime heritage. I actually sent an email to the committee in charge of arranging the celebration for SA's 175th birthday in 2011. Clippers were the last technological advance for tall ships before  steam power and this one is the last one in the world and it carries our cities name. What do you think? Don't take my word for it investigate yourself, present information and comment after you have reviewed the material. Ask to see Mr R's collected material and go to the web site for another source and sign the petition if you like...the web site also has passenger lists so you can see if any of your family came to SA on this tall ship.

SET WORK 5  SE    TALL SHIPS come to South Australia

For this basic there are 4 main parts & you will need to follow these task notes....

Part 1   INTRODUCTION includes mini title page.
Take notes for your introduction from the material Mr R___ll reads to you..
Trim and paste any photocopies given out and link to your text.
Look at any pin ups on our topic feature board...this will help to answer the question

How did Adelaide get its name?

 Part 2    YOUR CHOICE

Go to the  HISTORY SA   web site, check it out ...click here then do ...

Up to a 1 page mini report in your own words on the Kaurna People the original inhabitants of the Adelaide Plains, Colonel William Light surveyor general of the new colony, Captain John Hindmarsh our first governor, the Adelaide City Council or   other headings on the home page of history SA but some negotiation with Mr R___ll may be necessary. Remember to link text with supporting maps, pictures & illustrations and acknowledge sources of information

Part 3  HOW DID SOUTH AUSTRALIA'S FIRST FLEET DIFFER FROM THE FIRST FLEET TO NSW  Green ratings can negotiate an alternative presentation?

Part 4  SUMMARY

As with recent basics you need to state clearly what you have learnt from the basic as a summary and finishing off with a comment about how you would rate the topic of study and this way of learning.
Also acknowledge all sources of information books, posters in classroom, web sites

Tall ship design study could be started in set work 2 time for presenting in set work 3 or 4. During computer time and in silent reading session times start collecting information about tall ships particularly square rigged tall ships generally but also choose a particular ship to focus on as well. Some suggestions are Endeavour [Young Endeavour], Victory, Bounty, Cutty Sark, Buffalo and City of Adelaide...
The study will include dot points of information together with sketches and/or pictures showing detail that could be used on your own model. You need to keep a list of the web sites  and books you use because I don't want just web sites. Some of your material may be used to put together a flip chart on the IWB about tall ships or for an assembly presentation.
The main reason for this task is to enhance your own tall ship model with special detail that you have discovered and that we can model.

Robocup/robolab is a special Lego activity that will be available all year, but students that show the most interest earlier in the year will have the option to enter the competition.  Special time & sign offs will be made available particularly in term 2 for preparation. The competition is held early in Term 3. Try the School of the Future link to get more information....school of the future
