odd years        students            overview             parents              even years

The odd year learning program has a futures technology base to it although it does include environmental issues throughout the year. It starts in the early 1900's with a major study of the Titanic and then to a present day focus on cities and population issues which leads to a future study of space exploration and colonisation of the Moon and Mars.
To do this the year is divided into 12 Set Works, 3 per term and the following is mainly set work information associated with computing as we progress through the year.

  • Ongoing will be the development of your own web site using 'edweb' or web pages for the school web site or Mr R_____ll's web site using 'frontpage'. See me if you are interested in becoming more involved with the school web site.

  • I would advise you to try the new learning objects and digital learning web site, it will be of use in high school - see link following, the user name will be dlb@paringpkps.sa.edu.au and password is password.   Click here  dlb

  • The Google search engine is a commercially run search engine and as such will favour sites that may have a financial connection with Google.

Mr R____ll would like you to investigate the following search engines and let him know what you think....see what information they get for you on Australia+federation or disasters both natural or man made?    If you really find one useful remember to bookmark it for use again...you may like to bookmark the following as well.

This email may also be referred to during the parent interviews starting in week 10 so you have until the end of next week [week 9] to do this
Please use paragraphs and proofread, use size 12 and a standard font, include detail, too brief and it will be sent back to you.
It is a bit like a reflection of your year so far, share your thoughts about your education with me but include the following in your email...

SET WORK 6

TECHNOLOGY  continues on from the TITANIC, the ocean liner they thought had the most advanced technology to overcome anything nature could put in her way. How have ocean liners advanced from the Titanic of 1912 up to the present day technological state of the art 'QM2'.
Your heading will be the Evolution of the Ocean Liner post TITANIC and is due end of Set Work 6. It should include a table of data using the Titanic/QM2 as end points  for comparison purposes and data of at least 1 other ocean liner  between Titanic and QM2, check out chart for names of suitable liners in your workshop manual. Also include pictures to show changes in technology and describe what other technology became a real threat to the ocean liner, when and why? Allow for 1 colour page only and list all sources of information as you collect it using a search engine, don't forget 'encarta' as a starting point.
Presentation will be optional eg, tech workbook, poster with partner cut and paste, power point -bonus for assembly, verbal presentation to class.

SET WORK 5

SE   How big is your footprint?

      http://education.guardian.co.uk:80/egweekly/story/0,,2006238,00.html

Show students the Wikipedia table and map comparing emissions from different countries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions_per_capita).

The science behind CO2 in our life cycle is fascinating. Earth has developed a delicate juggling act whereby the amount of CO2 entering the atmosphere through respiration and decay is balanced by the CO2 absorbed by plants. The balance has been overturned through the burning of fossil fuels and the consequent release of CO2. The BBC weather pages provide an accessible explanation:
Illustrating the process would make a good introduction to the topic for students. Younger students can explore an animated explanation of the carbon cycle at www.epa.gov/climatechange/kids/carbon_cycle_version2.html, while older students can investigate the cycle at www.purchon.com/ecology/carbon.htm.
Explain this cycle, use diagrams to support your answer....

SET WORK 4

DB FEATURE: The following web site may help for the DB feature in set work 4, you will also need to write a short report about the camp experience and include a rating.

Arbury Park Outdoor School web site   http://www.arburypark.sa.edu.au/

HEALTH:  We look at one of the 5 senses of the human body HEARING ie, the ear. Mr R____ll actually has a hearing disability brought  on by the use of wood working with noisy power tools and not using ear muffs to protect sensitive parts of the ear. The disability is most evident trying to hear what people are saying in competition with background noise. We will see what  it is like to suffer a hearing loss in the classroom and to get the sign off you will need to participate in the experiment and in your workbooks explain the human hearing sense using text linked with diagrams.
