The Batavia is Australia's second oldest known shipwreck; the oldest is the English East India Company ship Trial lost off the north-west of Western Australia in 1622. Contrary to popular opinion it was the Dutch in 1606 who discovered Australia, not Captain Cook! In 1616, Dirk Hartog left a plate on Dirk Hartog Island, Shark Bay, commemorating his landfall. This is the earliest European artefact and is at present in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The Vlamingh Plate which replaced it in 1697 may be seen in the Maritime Museum.

Visit this Shipwrecks site shipwrecks and report as above.
This educational site looks at a number of famous shipwrecks around Australia, some that have been such a significant part of history that they had a town or landmark named after them.
With the assistance of Maritime Heritage state offices around the country, ABC Radio and Online researched the stories, speaking to witnesses and survivors, researchers and historians and in some cases visiting the wrecks with divers.
The result is a collection of exciting tales of intrigue, mystery and adventure on the high seas ... all of which contribute to Australia's colourful past, and the presence of now-famous landmarks along today's coastline.

After Mull we drove to Irvine, a small city on the South of Glasgow to examine an old clipper ship that was about to be dismantled. The name of that ship was The City of Adelaide, which for 23 years after 1864 brought immigrants to South Australia. According to the Adelaide Advertiser almost half the population of South Australia claims descendency from an early emigrant on this great vessel. My mission was to report to the Government as to options which could be taken to conserve that magnificent clipper ship, which had lately sunk at its moorings on the Fulloford Clide.

High hopes for tall ship's return

21st September 2001
ROYAL intervention has given impetus to a South Australian homecoming for the historic clipper City of Adelaide.

A conference in Glasgow, Scotland – convened by Prince Philip – has given hope to an Adelaide-based preservation group which wants to restore the decrepit hulk.

The meeting accepted suggestions from Prince Philip that:
DEBTS accrued by the ship, sitting on a private slipway at Irvine outside Glasgow, be paid off by the British Government.
OWNERSHIP of the ship be transferred from the Scottish Maritime Museum, which cannot afford further work on it, to the British Maritime Trust. Prince Philip is chairman of that trust.
PARTIES that want the ship each put their case to the trust, including evidence of ongoing funding for preservation or restoration.

Only Sunderland, on the north-east coast of England where the ship was built in 1864, and the Adelaide-based Save the Clipper Ship City of Adelaide 1864 Action Group, have said they want the vessel. Speaking from Glasgow early yesterday after the conference, the Adelaide group's convener, Peter Christopher, said the conference had made progress.

"Adelaide and Sunderland will need to develop and formalise proposals and establish a case there will be ongoing fundraising," Mr Christopher said. He said Prince Philip had listened with interest to his suggestion that the ship come to Adelaide and restoration be partly funded by people paying to see work in progress.
"He asked some pretty intensive, probing questions," he said.
"My sense is that Adelaide has a stronger case than (does) Sunderland."

Mr Christopher said he was now hoping for State or Federal Government funding to encourage contributions from the corporate sector. Transporting the ship to Adelaide would cost nearly $2 million. Scottish Maritime Museum director Jim Tildesley told The Advertiser there was sadness the historic vessel would have to leave Scotland where people had done much work to save it. A spokeswoman for Premier John Olsen said later yesterday the Government was interested to consider reports from the Glasgow meeting. The federal Environment and Heritage Minister, Robert Hill, could not be contacted.
