The Selkirk Rex originated in America in 1987. It is a large and solidly built breed, similar to a British Shorthair but with a characteristic curled coat. They can be either longhaired or shorthaired. Selkirk Rex’s have often been called the Cat in Sheep’s clothing because the coat has a woolly look and feel to it. British, Exotic and Persian are the accepted outcrosses for developing the Selkirk Rex as a breed.

Selkirk’s are known for their friendly and easygoing natures. They make wonderful family pets, as they are not only tolerant but also friendly with children and dogs.

Due to the nature of the Selkirk Rex breeding program, with the show quality Selkirk Rex still carrying the recessive gene for straight coat, we do have straight haired kittens occasionally available. However we also have some homozygous breeding cats that do not carry the straight coat and produce only curly litters. We choose not to show our homozygous cats, as at this stage, they can’t compete with the type of the heterozygous show cats, but they are very valuable for breeding and do produce lovely show quality heterozygous kittens.

“Neddy” is a homozygous Selkirk Rex. Ned is “Mr. Super Friendly”, he loves people and is a very well behaved and easy to handle stud boy. Being a homozygous cat all his kittens will have the Curly Rex coat. He is a good stud to put to an outcross female, as he is from several generations of Selkirk Rex X Selkirk Rex.

“Cree” certainly has the typical Selkirk Rex laid back nature. He is nice show type, with great boning and a lovely round head. His long Selkirk coat has a good amount of curl and is very easy to manage. Cree is currently entire and has fathered one litter but our plans are to have him neutered soon to become a show neuter.
