Series 1 Land Rover Project TBI

Original Carburetor

Fitting the throttle body to the original manifold was very simple but space between the TPS and rocker cover is minimal. The TPS, single injector and an idle valve are mounted to the body and connect to the wiring loom.

Plumbing consists of Fuel supply, Fuel return, 2 purge lines and a vacume point for the brake booster. The vacume point for a brake booster is handy for future plans with no suitable point located on the original manifold.

The carburetor, throttle linkages and choke were removed along with all of the brackets on the inlet manifold.

I had a spare manifold mounted to a head in the workshop that made sizing easier than working over the wing in the rain.

The carburetor fixing studs were removed and 2 countersunk stove screws with the same thread were purchased from the local wood heater supplier.

The base plate for the throttle body was drilled and countersunk to suit the holes in the manifold and then mounted retaining the original insulator.

A section of the base had to be removed to clear the forward section of the heater jacket. All of the excess metal will be removed before final installation.

This base was drilled to keep the side of the throttle body parallel to the manifold creating a clearance problem betwwen the TPS and the rocker cover. Drilling the holes 5-10 degrees anti clockwise would provide the desired amount of clearance.

If you stuffed up like me just elongate the holes or solder short leads onto the TPS and forget the plug.

Fuel lines were shortened to clear the motor and firewall ready to connect to some fuel lines.

The original Camira air cleaner mounts directly to the top of the throttle body and will need modification or replacement to clear the rocker cover.

The 2 wires for the injector can be seen in the picture and the square black connector bottom left is the idle solenoid, motor or valve depending which page of the Haynes manual you refer to.

Firewall rust and electrical wiring in very poor condition is shown behind the exploded view of the throttle body mounted to the manifold.

The EFI system will not rid the series 1 of all of its woes but it will be a good starting point. Once it is drivable the series 1 can be relocated to the workshop for some serious retoration work.

I pause everytime I use the word "restoration" beacause it doesn't really describe this project well indicating taking something back to what it was before and this is not what this Landrover is about.

Series 1 has to earn its keep when all of the work is complete. Judging progress to date I wouldn't hold my breath but momentum is gathering I haven't had a 4WD for a few years and the toes are twitching.
