Date of Birth: 13 January 1971Town where born: Hawera, New Zealand How did you get into racing? Interested in ponies and cross country (progressed from these). First Winner/Track: Silverdale (20/1/1988 – 3600m steeplechase). Favourite Track (and why): Oakbank. Because of the huge crowd and carnival atmosphere. Best thing about being a jumps rider: Being in control of such a powerful animal and the satisfaction of judging them to run long distances over obstacles. Worst thing about being a jumps rider: The falls and the disappointments that come with them. Best jumper you’ve ridden: St Steven. Jumper you would like to have ridden: Desert Orchid. Outside of racing what are you most passionate about? My family, golf and squash. What will you do after your riding career is over? Train racehorses. What is the strangest (amusing or serious) experience you’ve ever had in racing? Trying to defend myself against an excessive use of the whip charge in Italy. My Italian 0% nd the Italian Stewards’ English, 0%. It was very interesting. I was not found guilty in the end. What, in life, are you most afraid of? Great White Sharks. Would you like to tell us something about your family (partner, children, parents etc.)? My wife, Kylie is a good track work rider and former successful picnic rider. My daughter, Tylah (4 years), loves animals and has natural riding ability. Ethan (11 months), probably will be too big for horses and may be better at rugby or golf. |
