JUMPING JOCKEY PROFILES
PAUL HAMBLIN
Date of Birth: 13 August 1966Town where born: Warwick, Queensland How did you get into racing? Grandfather keen punter (a fan of the late CS Hayes) and Dad owned horse trained locally. First Winner/Track: Rue D'Amour / Warwick, Queensland. Favourite Track (and why): Warwick, Flat Racing - First winner and many others there and Warnambool, Jumps racing - open and picturesque track. Best thing about being a jumps rider: The heavier weight scale helped me stay in the saddle for a second chance. Worst thing about being a jumps rider: The thought of being at fault if a horse falls in a race. Best jumper you’ve ridden: Top Karla (hurdles) and Sea Fit (steeples). Jumper you would like to have ridden: St Steven. Outside of racing what are you most passionate about? Rugby League What are your riding career goals? Win Cup day hurdle if they reintroduce it and to just be as competitive in jumping races as on the flat. Also I would like to get a chance to ride in England and Ireland. What will you do after your riding career is over? Will sort that part out when time comes. What is the strangest (amusing or serious) experience you’ve ever had in racing? That I gave up professional flat race riding due to increasing weight 8 years ago, then be given a chance to be riding at Flemington, Moonee Valley and Sandown is something of a dream come true. What, in life, are you most afraid of? Getting too old to be able to continue riding over the jumps - otherwise nothing but to enjoy life and don't be afraid. Would you like to tell us something about your family (partner, children, parents etc.)? All very close and keep in touch regularly. Dad is a shearer and also runs two properties and follows racing keenly. Mum has been behind me thoughout my riding career and is involved in every local community project possible. She was the first lady President of local footy club which myself and my three borthers had played for since we were 5 years old. They still live in Leyburn which is a small country town where we were all raised. |
