Date of Birth: 12 February 1922. Town where born: Broken Hill, New South Wales. How did you get into racing? Followed Father's footsteps. Began riding in 1934 in Mildura. Apprentised in Melbourne to J Jury in 1936. First Winner/Track (flat and jumper): Kitty Simon at Moonee Valley (flat). Favourite Track (and why): Sandown because all horses have a fair chance. Best thing about being a jumps trainer: The challenge. Worst thing about being a jumps trainer: Horses breaking down. Best jumper you’ve trained: Masquerade and Kingston Campbell. What is the best jumper you would have loved to have trained: Latani. Who is the best jumping rider you have seen? What is the best race you have witnessed? Beaten by Tobin Bronze (I rode Samson). What is your best win on the flat? Samson - Sandown Highweight.. Outside of racing what are you most passionate about? Nil - racing, ever since I could walk. What is your training career goals? To win the 2003 Grand National Hurdle. What is the strangest (amusing or serious) experience you've ever had in racing? Having ridden the winner of a hurdle race by a mile and several horses having fallen, when I returned to jockey's room one of the rider's of a fallen horse said to me, "You're a lucky bastard", I asked why, and he said, "I was trotting, mate". "Yeah", I replied, "Where'd you fall? "At the first", he replied ! Would you like to tell us something about your family (partner, children, parents etc.)? I am very proud of my 4 children, Ron (Jnr.), Lauren, Greg and Michaela. My wife, Leigh, (married 36 years) is my foreperson. She comes from a racing family. Uncle Pat Curtain, bred and owned 1973 Melbourne Cup winner, Gala Supreme.
