Katanga's Lag B'omer Function
2001
The widely anticipated and famous
Caulfield Beth Hamedrash Lag B'Omer celebration this year was held on Thursday Night 10
May 2001. Once again, Katanga hosted a fabulous event that attracted a record crowd of
over 500 people from all sections of the community, confirming Katanga as 'the place to
be' on Lag B'Omer.
Families and children enjoyed themselves immensely through having rides on the Gym Bus and
Jumping Castle to feasting on Hot Dogs, drinks, Pop Corn & the crowd favourite, Fairy
Floss. Younger and older participants also tried their luck on the strength tester -
hammering with all their might - symbolising Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai's struggle against
oppression! All the while the Bonfire was burning brightly and the music was blaring
providing the traditional Lag B'omer atmosphere. The highlight of the night for the
younger participants was the performance of the fire-eater who entertained all with his
juggling and fire-eating tricks.
After the performance, the focus of the night switched to the older ages as Ari Bergman
took centre stage leading a Kumsitz around the Bonfire. Ari was ably assisted on the
guitar by Menchi Schneier, Eytan Epstein & Binny Fogelgarn. A crowd of about 60 people
joined Katanga's 'four piece orchestra,' staying late into the night singing the
traditional Kumsitz songs and the Lag B'omer special - 'Bar Yochai'.
The efficiency, smoothness and order of the night was a testament to the preparation and
effort invested by the team of chief organisers who included families Franck, Franck,
Pacanowski, Slodowitz & Elkus. Specific thanks must be awarded to the tireless and
cheerful efforts of Chana Franck, Chumi Franck and Shani & Havi Slodowitz amongst
others.
Of course much thanks goes to all those who assisted (identifiable by their official
glowing badges) setting up, manning tables and cleaning up throughout the night with a
special mention to family Susskind for their traditional custodianship of the Bonfire. The
Main Shul's contribution in subsidising the night was greatly appreciated by all those in
attendance. Thanks also to Mick Roth who jazzed up the evening with his keyboard. Mick
plays at all types of simchas and can be contacted on 9527 1481.
Looking forward to seeing you all again next year... in Meiron!
Well done to all!
