The May Report - Katangas Simchas Torah Dinner It was with great anticipation that people approached Simchas Torah this year. Not only were people excited about singing and dancing with their friends and the Torah, everybody was counting down each Hakofeh as one step closer to the beginning of the second annual Katanga Simchas Torah Dinner. After an enthused and exciting, but non-violent, night of Hakofes and lolly-bags, courtesy of our own Isaac & Shoshi Berkovits, almost 100 people made their way down Aroona Rd. Once there, people were amazed at the magnitude of the event - a small, intimate crowd of 100 Katanga Chevra sharing the spirit & spirits of Simchas Torah. Although the hour was late, or early morning to be precise, the vast crowd shared a delightful Yom Tov meal full of schnitzel, kugel, pasta, salads and ice-cream and of course the obligatory Simchas Torah drinks. Isaac Berkovits after a couple of L'Chaims for support enthralled the audience with his speech regarding the meaning of Succos and the warm, welcome place that is Katanga. His speech was so impressive that pressure is mounting for him to speak more regularly. As well, Isi Packanowski gave a short drasha explaining the meaning of the evening. The success of the night can be seen from the fact, that although tired and sweaty and with a big day of dancing and Kiddush eating ahead of them, people did not start leaving until after 2 am. Much thanks must go to the many organisers and helpers, without whom this mammoth event would not have got off the ground, let alone run so smoothly. There are obviously too many to mention, but at the risk of excluding others, Chumi Franck and Yirmie & Jordi Elkus deserve extra special praise for all their tireless efforts in the strategic and logistic planning stages. Major help was also provided by the following people; Moshe Shimon, Daniel Franck, Yigal Rueben, Ezra May, David Amzalak, Mendi & Shani Slodowitz. Special mention should also be made of those who helped out with the cooking. Due to the immense popularity of the dinner and extraordinary numbers, people found themselves catering for a large amount. A big Yasher Koach to all of them and hopefully they will continue to support the Shule for many years to come.
