Shaabi with bonus Drum Solo
Nov 19th, 10am—12pm, Classique Dance Studio
“ Adaweya Shaabaya “ – Cairo streets - Backstreet Beats !
Shaabi is a way of living in Egypt, not just a form of dance or music style.
However these are often used to celebrate the lives of the majority of
Egyptians living in poorer communities and parts of Cairo. The style
emerged during the 1980s and was embraced by many singers, most
notably by Ahmed Adaweya. The appeal of Shaabi music to audiences means that
most Cairene singers include a Shaabi song in their repertoire. This
workshop also offers a short drum solo choreography.

This piece of music will incorporate various aspects of Egyptian dance  movement into
your repertoire, variation, and folkloric elements to an Oriental spectacle !  Notes and Music available.

Robyn Flude (Tas)
Robyn teaches belly dance in Latrobe, Tasmania and performs with her enthusiastic student
troupe Hipnosis. At a recent performance, one drunken member of the audience stupidly
mistook her for a stripper (I'm not going to give away what happened—I'll let Robyn tell
the story). This incident inspired the subject for the Belly Dancer's Forum.

Belly Dancer's Forum and Afternoon Tea
Nov 19th 3:30pm—5pm, St Ailbe's Hall
Robyn will lead everyone through a discussion on the current perceptions of belly dance. Do we
need to change the perceptions? How? Should we even try? What do we do when we
experience a problem punter? Everyone will be encouraged to voice their opinions. The
forum will also have an afternoon tea available (included in the cost) so that you can relax
and recharge while engaging in lively discussion. Please bring your own cup so that we
can avoid using disposable ones.

Razi (Tas)
Razi attended his first drumming class with Melbourne drummer, Anne Harkin, in the mid 90s
and on that day, his drumming obsession began. Known for his thorough but laid back teaching methods,
Razi is a favourite amongst drumming students of all ages.
