About Karli
Deaf Wellness service, Deaf Yoga and Counselling
Karli believes in supporting Deaf and hard of hearing people to actualise their maximum potential to be the person they want to become. With Yoga, maintaining a healthy spine keeps the mind healthy. With counselling sessions, expressing personal issues in safe, confidential and caring settings in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) are the ideal conditions for Deaf individuals to understand themselves better. Once problems are understood and manageable, yoga is offered to provide individuals educational tools to practice at home to maintain a clear and balanced perspective on life. Workshops are also provided to develop understanding and skills on a number of topics in a fun and safe group setting.
Furthermore, being parents require endurance, stamina, commitment with a positive outlook on life. Yoga is a great way to keep this delicate act balanced. She understands as she is a mother of three young beautiful children all under 11 years old. In her early twenties, she has always been fascincated with yoga. She finally learned how to practice yoga with deaf instructors in USA in early 1990s and UK in early 2000s. In late 2004, she was very pleased to discover a course, Advanced Diploma of Yoga Teaching, was available at CAE in conjunction with The Australian Institute of Yoga (www.australian-institute-yoga.com.au). She studied two years full time with interpreters provided. Now she loves yoga passionately; she reads yoga books and practices yoga everyday and sometimes with her husband.
As part of her professional development, Karli has studied with internationally known yoga teacher Donna Farhi in 2010, 2011 and 2012. In those yoga intensive courses Karli studied the Sacro-iliac Joint (the region between the legs and torso and the meeting point of the pelvis and spine) the Spinal Integration and Centreing Down(developing stronger inner cores muscles by following our breathing and energetic movements). Karli has also attended other yoga and counselling professional development workshops yearly to update her yoga teaching and counselling skills.
Karli is also a freelance writer for DiVine, an online community for and by people with a disability. She sometimes writes about her Deaf parenting experiences. Some examples of the articles are in the Deaf Parenting page.
