Deaf Counselling

Karli provides counselling for Deaf and hard of hearing people and their families. The difference Karli provides in comparison to other counsellors practicing in Australia is the fact she is Deaf, fluent with Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and has in-depth understanding of issues deaf people face. She provides counselling in the areas of:

  • mental health problems
  • identity issues
  • stress and anxiety
  • anger
  • relationship difficulities
  • group therapy
  • or simply feel overwhelmed and unable to cope on a day to day basis.
  • Karli also provides Online Deaf Counselling for clients who live in another state or in rural areas. Check out the Online Deaf Counselling on YouTube. Some Deaf clients do not feel comfortable using an interpreter in the counselling sessions, they see Karli for direct counselling in Auslan.

Karli has studied and worked with Deaf and hard of hearing clients who have or had psychiatric disorders (serious mental health problems) and who have been inadequately assessed by psychiatrists who have no knowledge in Deafness or Deaf culture. Karli consults and educates psychiatrists when Deaf and hard of hearing clients need urgent assessment, intervention and/or medication.

Karli has a MA degree in Mental Health Counselling (from Gallaudet University at Washington D.C., USA) in 1998 as well as a BA in psychology and developmental drama in 1996. She also completed a foundation certificate in family therapy (London, UK) in 2000.

Karli is a member (Level 3) of the Australian Counselling Association. She is bound by its Code of Conduct, and subject to its complaints procedure. A personal Indemnity Insurance also covers her service. Counselling brochures & Code of Conduct booklets are available on request.
